Af seems to have a lot of varying uses for different jobs. Thf's have a lot for macroing in (mainly for flee and steal). Drk's have jack crap, don't know anyone that wears it for anything other than looks. Rng's, well everything besides hands (which we macro in for shadowbind) is about the best you can get at the time. Infact, the hat is good to atleast 70 (more if you'd rather have the r. atk than the r. acc of O. hat) and the body is good until endgame if you can ever get an Osode. Whm's have several good pieces iirc, and rdm's get to use all of theirs a lot (though the macro whores still switch lots of things out here and there all the time). Pld's get a lot of use out of 90% of theirs, all the way to endgame I believe until af2 and abjurations become available. Smns? I've heard its pretty well useless. Ninja's, I think a couple pieces are situational (nighttime being the big one). I'm drawing a blank on the other jobs, and am probably off on several of the things I just stated, so feel free to correct me. From what I understand DRK's and SMN's get the extreme shaft, while RDM's and to an extent RNG's win the lottery.

Back when Astral Rings were in coffers in Castle Oz, many of us with AF pieces in there monikered AF as ... Absolutely Frustrating.
At least it's a bit easier to get your AF done than in the past. New players absolutely have no idea of what many players had to go through (suffer) to get their AF set completed.
I can post about the ones I've gotten...
WHM AF1 hands are endgame worthy. Legs are okay, depending on race. (+30ish MP from hume and mithra RSE is worth losing -1 enmity over.) Feet are good when you get them. Body is good until 70 (blessed body) or 72 (errant) if you can't get a nobles tunic or VC. The head is so-so. Hairpins are better, I think.
SMN AF1 has two good pieces... Legs and feet. Everything else does the opposite of what the SMN wants avatars to have. I want +enmity for my avatars, not -.
BLM AF1 feet are okay for their level. They have -enmity on them, which is hard to come by at level 52. The legs are okay if you can't get magic slacks...otherwise they're good for macroing into drain/aspir. Hands are really good. Body is good for macroing into debuff spells, otherwise you're better off with any sort of +INT body equipment you can wear at that level. The hat is pretty good though.
MNK AF is fairly situational. The body is great for it's price (free!), but is replacable by a scorpion harness if you can afford it. Even then, it's still useful to be macroed into chakra. Hands are pretty good. Like the body, you can buy better gear if you have a lot of money to burn. And in MNK's case, you can definately hit a point where STR doesn't help you as much as ATK, so if you hit that point, the hands are only really useful for boost. The legs aren't too good. The feet are only good for macroing dodge. And the head is only good for chi blasting (+MND on the temple crown) or macroing into a focus macro.
For DRKs I hear the only decent piece is the head, for souleater. Unfortunately, many DRKs misuse souleater already... (I wanted to strangle the DRK that was doing souleater + guillotine in my party when I was a SMN main healer.)
On AF2...
WHM gets a fairly good set of AF2. The body is great, the head is pretty good (if you can get past how it looks), the legs are nice, the hands are pretty good, and the feet are...well...not so good.
SMN AF2 is awesome. The worst piece out of all of them is the legs, but that has -blood pact on it, like the rest of the set. And I don't even miss the "enhances avatar accuracy" on the AF1 legs. (Which makes me believe that AF2 hands avatar accuracy increase doesn't stack with AF1 legs avatar accuracy increase.)
MNK AF2 has some good pieces, but like MNK AF1 - you can buy/get better. The hands are a good alternative to o-kote. Plus it increases chakra by healing an additional .6 for every VIT you have. (Chakra starts off at HP healed = 2xVIT. AF1 body increases it to 3xVIT, and with AF1 body and AF2 hands it goes up to 3.6xVIT.) The legs are pretty good if you match them with dune boots and kick attack proc rate merits. But I feel that haste gear is better than kick attack gear overall anyway. The AF2 body is just silly. Auto-regen doesn't do much good when you have 1500HP. And the head is okay, but the optical hat is situationally better (and easier to get), and shura head is pricy, but usually better than either the optical hat or the melee crown.
And I haven't leveled DRK much, but I learned much about it...so I feel confident enough to say that DRK AF2 is kind of a sick joke too. Much of it is based around the magic aspect of DRK, which gets little use in the 70's.

I got lucky since I never did an oz coffer when there were astral rings there. Although I did help several people get theirs. I just seem to get garliage a ton. I feel sorry for people with Sea Serpent Grotto and Kuftal coffers now. Both are pretty overrun with gilsellers.
