  • WoW player questions

    Greetings,

after playing WoW for more than a year, and with the clearance of BWL (end-game dungeon in wow) before 2weeks, I got really bored of it. So me and some friends are thinking of starting FFXI. But well, there are some questions I'd like to ask:

    a) In WoW, the servers were overpopulated of some classes, like Rogues, and there were a few of other classes like Warlocks. So, if for example, you had a rogue it was really tough to find a group, or a guild, are there such problems with FFXI? Because I'm thinking of playing a bard, and I wouldnt like to have these...

    b) Since a FFXI player spends most of his time for EXP, from what I found out the average 1-75 in FFXI is 100~days, and in WoW I lvled my second character to lvl60 in 11days, when is it the time, for him to go to end game things, like these Gods etc? And if someone dies how many exp is the penalty?

    c) If I'm gonna quit WoW, I'm thinking of focusing a little more on studying, at least on weekdays, so I would like to ask: FFXI is a good game for a player with no standard schedule, and not a lot playtime (arround 25hours a week).

    d) I was a big fan of PvP in WoW. I got both my chars to reach a high rank in PvP (not that tough with a good premade group ). Is there pvp in FFXI?

These were my questions. Thanks in advance, and sorry for my poor english. I was both in hurry and I wasnt paying much attention. ^.^

    Re: WoW player questions

    a) the jobs are pretty spread out in FFXI. But depending on your luck, you have a chance to log in and see many other same jobs seeking PT rivalling you too.
Brd tho you shouldn't worry about this because they are pretty rare... and well loved :D

    b) exp penalty is 10% the amount you need to level up. Then later it will cap at 2,700 exp max I think...

About the time you need.. I don't know...
depends on how hardcore you are, how soon you get a hold of the game, the other players around your level you run into, and how helpful the people you meet are, too.
I would say around 6 month to get to max level for average player.
for someone already know about the game and play a second jobs it can be much faster, like me I level my rdm to max in less than a month.

    c) what you think is totally wrong. Compare to WoW, FFXI requires far far far far more investment in times. It is much much much slower to do anything in FFXI.
You can definitely enjoy FFXI with a limiting time. But keep in mind that your progress will be slow. much slower than WoW.

    d) pvp in ffxi exists in form of a practice war game, more like a sport.
There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

      a) Bards are godly in FFXI. The problem is the job is extremely boring to most people. So leveling it to 75 can be a chore. If you want to level up fast, then bard is the job for you! Other jobs would be whm, nin, blm, and rdm (a little slow in the beginning but 41+ it goes fast).

      b) If your a mage type job, at lvl 65 you could start doing end game activities. If your a melee or a tank, then it would be 70. At end game, you'll get into an endgame linkshell (guild). Each guild has certain requirements before you can join. In mine you have to be lvl 70, have sky access (an area you open doing missions), we must have an opening for the job you are (multiple 70+ jobs are encouraged), and other mission based requirements. It's basically stuff to show your dedication to the game and hopefully shows you have at least average skill to get these things completed.

As far as exp goes, you'll lose about 250 exp when you die usually. There are always high lvl whms in the alliance/party that can raise you. Sometimes in hectic situations you'll have to take a lower lvl raise and loose more exp but you can easily make this up in linkshell exp parties, farming god pop items, or by doing escort or enm's.

      c) This is tricky. FFXI is the type of game you get on and can sit for an hour or two looking for party. It is not solo friendly. You could level beastmaster but before you get to level 30 and do the quest to open the job to you, you'll have to sit and seek for parties. If your looking at only being able to play an hour or two a day, then no I don't think FFXI will fit you. If you can sit for 4+ hours in one day a couple times a week, then yes you could play as long as you had patience.

      d) As said before, we have instanced PvP via Ballista. It's like playing basketball with PvP. LOL But they did just recently release information about having other PvP in the game. We really don't know any details though, just that they said there would be additional PvP areas. They are also giving us a city that has town invasions which sounds quite interesting and fun! Of course, this doesn't let you attack other players but fun none the less.

how can i put this? none of the servers are overpopulated with any job. and bards have the easiest time finding a party of any job in the game. bard is also cheap and easy to equip, and any linkshell (guild) would love to have you along.

keep in mind too, that you can -and will- change jobs at any time. you can be a level 50 bard a 37 white mage a 20 warrior a level 17 samurai and a level 30 dragoon all on the same character. thinking you won't switch jobs from time to time is like thinking you won't ever solo in wow: you will. that's what you do in this game, and it's fun

        b) Since a FFXI player spends most of his time for EXP, from what I found out the average 1-75 in FFXI is 100~days, and in WoW I lvled my second character to lvl60 in 11days, when is it the time, for him to go to end game things, like these Gods etc? i've been playing for more than a year, and i don't have even one job to 75 yet.

100 days? o.O more like 100 days /played lol. (actually more like 50 days /played) it's common to not reach the level cap on any job before a year of playing, but it depends on how much you powergame. it's...possible... to cap out a job in a few months, i guess... but one thing is sure: it takes a loooong time to cap out a job. you won't run out of things to do very quick in this game.

typically, most players begin the early parts of endgame around level 60 or so, give or take. it varies by job and by what you classify as "endgame"

the xp penalty is harsh. it starts out gentle, but after a couple dozen levels into the game, it gets harsh. when you die, you lose a ton of exp. you can de-level, too.

        c) If I'm gonna quit WoW, I'm thinking of focusing a little more on studying, at least on weekdays, so I would like to ask: FFXI is a good game for a player with no standard schedule, and not a lot playtime (arround 25hours a week).
a hahahah hahaha... no, but... hahahaha

sorry, had to get that out of my system. ffxi is very restrictive on schedules. to play this game well, you basically have to live in the game. it takes hours to level, hours to build a party, and hours to get everything set up to begin to build the party. 25 hours a week? how long can you play in one sitting? when you log on, if you can't be online for more than 2-4 hours straight, you shouldn't even bother trying to find a party. oh yeah, and there's no soloing. none. zero. zip (except beastmaster. bst is our one and only solo job) and you will need to be online for 2+ hours at a time to level effectively. it takes time to build a party in this game. as a bard, you'll find parties quick, though.

        d) I was a big fan of PvP in WoW. I got both my chars to reach a high rank in PvP (not that tough with a good premade group ). Is there pvp in FFXI?
there is no pvp in ffxi. we have a ..."form"... of pvp called ballista, where you and the other players meet at a special arena at a pre determined time to play what essentially amounts to a soccer match. you have teams and you score points by throwing stones at targets. it is nothing ike the pvp you are used to. there is no open pvp, no ganking, no dueling, no fighting outside the special arenas.

ffxi and wow are about as different as two games can be. this game has a deep and intriguing storyline, and the world is deep and immersive. but to reach that story and that immersion takes an unholy ammount of time and work. this game is challenging, immersive, and rewarding, and above all else it's time consuming and frustrating . but if you're willing to put a little work into it, this game can be very good.
