  • First post, many questions!

    Hi,

I've been playing for a week or two (lvl 8 MNK, Galka named Cawrclen, Windurst) and am well and truly hooked. I love this game. There are a few things that I am unsure of though...

Should I be doing more missions? I've only done one so far. If so, where do I get these missions...randomly speaking to NPC's doesn't get me far. Is there somewhere in Windurst where the mission giving npc's all gather?

I've partied up a couple of times and learnt a lot that way, but how do I join a linkshell...do I just walk up to people and ask "hey stranger, can I join your linkshell?"

Just a bit more on what I've been doing....joined the Fishing Guild and just sold my first stack of mackerel, purchased a few new bits of armour, done a bit of exploring (reached that maze in the North East past the bones). I was warned off entering because the monsters are meant to be 17...btw, how do you know what level the monsters are?

Anyway, hello to you all and I hope to see you around.

    Cawrclen

For your mission guide and level references I would suggest this site: MysteryTour. There you can find all the mob levels and suggestions on what levels to do missions as well as walkthroughs for them.

Hi, glad you're enjoying the game.

Missions are assigned to you from the guards near the exists to the city. Other quest can be picked up from various NPCs. Either ask around randomly, check Mysterytour from bikkebakke's post, ffxi.somepage.com or ffxi.allakhazam.com all are good references.

I'd advice against just walking up to a stranger to get a linkpearl although if you want to just someone you could ask. Try asking a party member you get along with or something.

You can see how hard monsters are by selecting Check from the menu that opens when they're targeted (where you select Attack). This does get harder to gauge by later though. I suggest sticking to Easy Prey or possibly Decent Challenge mobs for the next few levels, if you find DCs too hard then stick to EPs. Around level 10-12 The Maze of Shakrami you found can be a good place to level with a party. Get upto 6 people of a sililar level and go there, the maze makers (worms) can be very good exp though they are better for rangers and mages.

Thanks for the link. I think I will go there if I'm stuck for mission.

I will make a point of speaking to the guards at the exits now. Apart from trying to do more missions I think I will just try to lvl up solo and do some fishing. Then when I'm an 11 or 12 I will try and organise a party to go to the maze. (I did know how to check enemies but I was confused when I was told "That's a lvl 12 monster".)

Thanks very much for the advice.

ps One more question, what level is the Dragon that's in the canyon where the bird people live (I forget the name now...Giddeus?). I've been there once, near the entrance, to lvl up with in a party with a WHM. What lvl should I be before I go there to do some more exploring?

I wanna say giddeus is around level ten. I think you can solo it. Just make sure you check the mobs.

Closer to the entrance in Giddeus level 10 is ok. Don't go too far back though cause the mobs get to be in the mid 20's in the back.

The Dragon you fight there is for Mission 2-3, you won't fight the one there being from Widurst, you'll fight one near either Bastok or San d'Oria. The fights are capped to level 25, I wouldn't recomend it before then.

or you can go to valkrum dunes. it's easier to get a pary to go there

a monster checks "even match" when it's your same level, that's how you can tell what level a mob is. if you go there at level 12 and the mobs stat to check even match, then you know these are level 12 mobs. the levels of the mobs in a zone always vary by a level or two, so saying a mob's level is a general statement.

Thanks. The valkrum Dunes...I will explore there soon!

I'm slightly confused by the term "mob". What is it, just a gang of monsters?

                    mob is a monster

what you can easily do is level on crawlers, experience is not the best but you can get huge amount of money farming silk thread. sell those in stacks at the AH.

at level 9-10 you can go to valkurm dunes. the way is a bit hard, you have to travel to mhaura and take a ferry from there to selbina.

                    few tips:
                    - don`t go out without signet ^^
                    - eat some grilled hare meat
                    Monchichie

Well a mob is a monster, thanks hehe.

Yeah I've been fighting a lot of Crawlers just to get the silk (and that stone they produce too). Another good earner has been Yaguda necklaces.

I will have a think about going to the Valkurm dunes in the next few days. I want to do a couple of missions first...then the beta server is being turned off and I won't be able to play until the 20th!

ps I think I have signet...what is it again?
pps Do i just buy the hare meat at the AH?

hare meat price is pretty insane on our retail servers. if it's cheap in beta then sure buy them.

Signet allows you to get crystals from mobs. If you dont have it up you cant get crystals. Try to have it always.

I must have it because I've got a lot of crystals. I'm not sure where I got it from though

From a guard. You ask them something like "Can you cast signet on me please?". Signet will let you get Conquest Points (tradeable for items) too, so wear it always!
