  • Is it worth it?

Ok, I've been playing Guild Wars for going on 7 months now I've gotten to be SOOO bored with it and feel like moving onto this game.

Ive played Final Fantasy 6-X2 and are a VERY huge fan of the series.
I'm wondering if this game is worth it, like really.. I cannot find information on it that answers what i want. Just if you guys could..

Whats the game like? Is it like the old final fantasys?
    Is there PvP?
What are these worlds/servers that people talk about?

    Re: Is it worth it?

well, i think more people here will tell you that this game is awesome. it IS a ffxi forum you know

    to answer your questions:

    - its similar to the old ff's in some ways. but its a whole new game in itself too.
    - pvp is limited to scheduled events called ballista. there is no pvp like you would find in wow or other games.
    - worlds is just another name for server. each world is identical to the next other than the players that are in them.

a word of advice: ffxi isnt other games in the sense that it's solo friendly or easy-show-me-what-to-do-and-where-to-go type fo game. you will have to party 95% of the time in this game. thats a whole other topic however. quests and missions are pretty blind if you dont look them up before hand on a website. the quest giver give you a few clues and what he wants and tahts usually it. they dont tell you how or where to get them usually and they surely dont mark the quest giver like other games do. ffxi takes a lot of time. you need to actually devote time to do things. time to xp. time to craft/make gil. time to quest/missions. so if you are looking for a game that has a deep story line, and even deeper game involvment, then this is for you. but thats just my opinion anyhow.

      Re: Is it worth it?

It really depends on your tastes in MMOs.

Being a fan of Final Fantasy definitely helps. There's a lot in there that feels very "Final Fantasy"-esque, and the game follows the same high production values and quality design as any other Final Fantasy game.

Gameplay-wise it's vastly different from any other game in the series. The game is heavily Player vs. Enemy based, but there is PvP in the form of "Conflict," a series of traditional Vana'delian sports and training methods brought back into practice by the three nations. Currently, only one form of Conflict is available in Ballista, an old San d'Orian Knights training sport in which you must dig up "Petras" and defeat an enemy to throw your Petras in the enemy's goal, or "Rook." More types of Conflict PvP will become available in the future; one is even expected next month, according to the latest Update News.

The game divides people up between over 30 servers, called "Worlds" by some. Every server has its own unique population and economy, and one character may only belong to one server.

no. world passes allow you to create NEW characters on another server. you'll loose everything on your existing character.

there are very loose guilds called linkshells.

          Thanks Yyg!

                  Re: Is it worth it?

The North American version of the game shipped with the Rise of Zilart expansion, Chains of Promathia had to be bought seperatly. However, there is a version out now that includes all 3, the original, RoZ and CoP. It is called The Vana'diel Collection. You can buy it at Best Buy online, and I'm sure plenty of other places. This is taken from the Best Buy website:

Twenty years after the Great Crystal War threatened the kingdom of Vana'diel, another terrible threat has arisen. The beastmen are reorganizing their forces and marching towards San d'Oria, Windurst and Bastok, leaving those nations to desperately seek out any adventurers who might defend them. Will you answer the call of daring deeds and deadly danger? In Final Fantasy XI, you'll enter a rich and expansive world in this popular massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG).

This special edition comes with a complete version of the original game as well as two expansion packs, Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia, that expand the storyline and include new items, spells, options and much more. This ever-expanding world features regular content additions of new and exciting elements to the evolutionary gameplay. The Vana'diel Collection also includes a pass good for 30 days of free adventuring for new subscribers.

                  Features
-Play for one of three nations and undertake missions, complete quests and learn more about Vana'diel

-Explore more than 100 areas, including mountains, forests, ice plains, deserts, oceans, rivers, castles and dungeons
-Includes the original game plus two expansion packs — Chains of Promathia and Rise of the Zilart
-Subscribers will receive their first 30 days of gameplay free of charge and an iTunes Collector's Card good for a free download from Final Fantasy Tunes

                      Re: Is it worth it?

To kinda add to what Johnny said, he said bestbuy online has the Vana Collection (on DVD's btw, so it uses fewer discs). Last time I was at the Bestbuy here, they had a couple copies of it on the shelf, so it may not be necessary to wait those endless days waiting for it to show up on your doorstep.
Also on the worldpasses, usually if you just create a character, it will put you on the least populated server, however, with a worldpass, you can go to whatever server that WP is from, for instance if you have a friend on Midgardsormr, he can get you a WP and you won't have to chance being put on the same server.
