Cannot install FFXI, disc error!

HELP!
I am trying to install FFXI, but it will not even read Disc 1. This is a VERY nice computer, it can play any game out at the moment, but won't read FFXI. There is no more FTP to download the game as well, I hear, so please help me out. I've tried converting the disc to a .nrg file but it doesn't work either. HELP!!!

(This is the only computer capable of playing it in the house, by the way)

Yeah I am, unfortunately it's not

try replacing the CDRom drive and/or IDE cable connected to said CDRom drive.

Don't know if that's the issue if it's happening with the FFXI CD and not the others then I would think it's the CD with the problem, especially if it's a newer system.

Changing hardware is something you shouldn't do first. The basic order of evaluation and troubleshooting I've been taught is always:

User
Portable Media (Disks, CDs, Memory Cards)
Software
System
Network

In this case since it's loading a CD, and it seems apparent the User knows what he's doing then next is seeing if the CD is fine. Test other CDs to see if they work.

NONE of the four discs for FFXI work!!
The PlayOnline disc installed and runs just fine, but FFXI does not.

These are quite old discs however, I bought the game right when it came out. I've had these for a year, and let me tell you there are no scratches. My disc drives run any other game/disc just fine. What should I do? I can't really afford to purchase another FFXI or disc drive.

didn't you say you had another computer in the house, try them on that computer.

Yes, that's a good idea that should knock out portable media, software, and system should be able to identify which it is with that. Network in this case shouldn't apply so no need to test that one.

On the laptop, it executes the installer - sort of.
It comes up with 'setup.exe has generated an error and must be closed', installer does not start or anything. On this computer it generates no errors, it just never starts the setup even if I 'explore' the disc.

Is there nowhere I can download it? Please help!

sounds like bad media to me. Try sending SE CS an email/phone call to see if they'll send you replacement disks.

I'd try this but since it's been a year it's a little iffy on if they'll help or not. Most issues involved with software is only good for like the first 15-30 days after that it's kind of tough luck.

I definatly sounds like the CDs might of been bad from start especially if they have no scratches and no bending of any sort. As for a download there is no legal method that I know of, and I would refrain from requesting it here another Mod or if I see that request will have to give you a warning you if you do.

For that it would classify as a Warez/Piracy which has a 4 point warning, means 1 more and you'd get ban for a couple of days. Just an FYI for you right now so do be careful. I do hope what neighbortaru suggested works.

i went thru a similiar problem on a recent reinstall. originally the game installed without any problems. when i went to reinstall after a disconnect caused me to lose some files? i would get about halfway thru disc 1 and would get an error, after several trys finally got disc 1 installed, then disc 2 error. called customer support tried all of their suggestions, none of which worked. i finally disconnected my dvd drive and installed a very old cd-rom drive. installation was smooth and easy. i understand some of these problems are due to the disc type SE choose, some drives have problems reading them. now heres something that's kind of funny. after losing original hard drive, installing a new hard drive and fresh os install. i installed ffxi without any problems on same drive that wouldnt read the discs on previous reinstall. so maybe its a combination of things? good luck

i finally just bought a new game, and it worked!! now i am happily playing
