Typing Japanese Characters with American Version of FFXI?
Article 4, Section 1:
PLAYONLINE, THE SOFTWARE AND THE DOCUMENTATION ARE PROTECTED BY UNITED STATES AND FOREIGN COPYRIGHT AND TRADEMARK LAWS, AND INTERNATIONAL TREATIES, AND ARE THE SUBJECT OF TRADE SECRETS.UNAUTHORIZED REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOFTWARE IS SUBJECT TO CIVIL AND CRIMINAL PENALTIES.
Being defenders of this agreement, the Moderators must have removed the topic (which is rather extensive...a whole topic and not the individual posts; there was some good info in there). I suppose you can consider this a "civil penalty."
Please, purchase your own Japanese POL.
Peace,
Jimmy G.

the reason why the NA version not haveing Japanese imput has been answered already, and no it is not because they want our money..............
For the PS2 version you can blame Sony not Square, and for PC it would have made each copy cost about 20-30 bucks more......
now on that other thread it did have lots of great info on it....wish they had not deleted the whole thing, but there are some programs that will alow you to make your macros in Japanese, but other than that there is nothing that i know if that will allow this to be done

Kain (FFIV): I am aware of my actions, but can do nothing about them.
You need the JPN POL CD to do it, but it converts the language to Japanese for the whole game, which is fine with people who really want it.
I can't understand why there would be a copyright issue with software that is useless without a game subscription. You have to buy a full copy to get the keys that allow you to subscribe, so having an alternate launcher that enables you to type in another language seems like a stupid thing to badger people over.
I would bet that there is an bittorent or edonkey hosted Japanese POL CD out there anyway. This game is very popular, so I'm sure someone has to have it out there somewhere for people who lost their original CD. Has anyone tried to ask Sony for a replacement POL JPN CD for a nominal fee or something?
I dont see there any problem either. If you own the game, you own the licence. I dont think it is forbidden to own the japanese POL, if you have already buyed the English original.
Because I live in Japan, I bought the original game here 2 months ago. Was about $35.
For those who still want the jp. POL I recommend to take a closer look at the edonkey network.
Piracy: The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material
That being said, you do NOT own the japanese POL. So you do NOT have the right to have the product legally.

It doesnt matter. The thing is, you do not own the japanese copy. You own no rights to it. You didnt accept any agreements making you have it. Its not legally yours to have.
Its the same thing with "roms." I believe the law says that you can make legal backups of your own software. However, it is against the law to download someone else backup, because you dont own that exact place it came from.

While all of that sounds very interesting, and it is undoubtedly true, who in their right mind would want to enforce it under these circumstances? The copies are only useful to people who legally purchased the game.
ROMS are a bad example to site here because you can get someone elses ROM and it IS useful to you because you can PLAY a game you never paid for here. That is not the case for FFXI and it's subscription based model and CD key copyright protection.
I know you are arguing the legality of the matter here, and that really can't be disputed. What is disputed is whether anyone would bother to punish customers who already bought the game and want to be able to continue to play, and therefore continue to pay for the game on a monthly basis. Where are the losses that would make them run to the court rooms? Is Japanese input the money loss? I don't think so. Windows already allows us to do it, and without it on Windows, the input wouldn't work.
Would Square really want to bite the hands that feed them when the people who seek replacement CDs do so to continue to play, and pay for their game? I seriously doubt it. Anybody who charged someone for a copy would clearly be someone they would want to go after though. Otherwise, why bother?
Again, I don't question the legality of the matter, I would only question the logic in wanting to enforce it against their customers. I just don't see it happening. Anyone who downloads the CD image from the net is saving them money so that they don't have to send them a free copy like they have done for others with lost or destroyed CDs.
I think someone should call Square and find out what their stance is on this. I really have a hard time believing that this is anything they would raise hell over.
News flash, I just called Square to put this whole thing to bed, and guess what? THEY SAID THEY DON'T CARE. They just do not want people selling it. They said that they DO NOT have any problems with GIVING someone the JPN POL cd so that they can use Japanese input.
The only reason that you can't get the JPN version in North American and otherwise, is because there was no market for Japanese software over here. It wouldn't sell well enough to justify it.
There, let's just get that out in the open. If you don't believe me, call Square and ask to speak to a MANAGER just like I did.
So, rejoice FFXI players, share your JPN CD all you want with other players. Square is happy to let people use an alternate language CD is that floats their boat.
There, thanks, the end. No need to delete anymore threads with links to the CD.
Ninjitsu, get that in writing please, e-mail or letter.
What one â–_e employee said over the phone may not have much reliability behind it.
And always get the name of the person you're talking to.
I initially asked for it in writing from the first person, but I forgot to follow up with them to have a letter mailed to me. The call was recorded and went on record though. The first Square support person wasn't a manager, so I asked to get a confirmation from a manager, in person. The manager took my call and I ran it by him again, and he explained to me that it was ok. I didn't write his name down, but I should have.
I'm usually pretty busy at work when their office would be open, and I took about 30 minutes between meetings to give them a call. I think I'll write them a letter and ask if they wouldn't mind putting a bulletin on the POL news update or something. That way everyone can see it, and not just those who came here and stumbled upon the posts.
Oh, im not saying i support it, im just laying down what is lol. Me, or anyone else, doesnt want this site to get in trouble. I dont claim every gamei have is legal lol
I fully understand what you are saying, and I agreed with you
Most companies have standard legal material they issue for their protection from people who want to make money on their products without their consent. The agreements let them go after people who rip them off.
I'm glad that the Square rep stated their stance on the use of the JPN POL. I knew they wouldn't really care since they didn't have anything to lose, and I'm glad that I called them about it. Now, as far as support goes, I'm sure that if you told them that you ran the NA version using the JPN launcher, they might not support a problem you have with the game installation until you change things back to the way they packaged it for your release.
