Firewalls can be setup to disallow any connection to a specific port or range of ports, it can be setup to only allow outbound from a specific port and only allow inbound in another specific port, it can be setup to not allow any outbound but only allow inbound from a specific device.
It's basically the first line of defense for you system on a network or internet.
Aside from that if you want better performance out your programs that actually use TCP and UDP ports then you'll want to setup up the router to port forward them or configure the router to enable UPnP if you have Windows XP setup for it (then also configure your Windows system to use those ports).
If you don't have Windows XP and can't get UPnP to work then you'd have to resort to Port Forwarding and Port Triggering. If you use those though make sure that you enable the session when going to use and to ensure your system's security isn't altered remember to disable the sessions. UPnP does this automatically for you so it is better secured.
Also for the login make sure it is exactly as typed [Guest] not [guest] and not [GUEST] must be a capital "G" with lower case "uest".
