  • a new piece of armor I may or may not release

Ive been playing a lot of diferent games lately when I actually have time to play them, and have seen lots of different styles of armor so...recently playing oblivion, Ive decided I may make a few pieces influenced by that game. depending on how I feel, I may finish this, or may just leave it as a project...not sure, I guess it would depend on the feedback on this. still playing around with the darkness of the oufit, and a few slight things here and there....and a name for this thing.. kinda looks something like a mithril outfit, so I may just call it my mithril gear... anyways heres the pics of a WIP of mine, that may or may not get finished. As always feedback if always welcome.

    P.S---------------
only the body piece has been touched for now... havent even GLANCED at anything else so keep that in mind.

Its a pretty good start, the only problem i see is the resolution problem; It isnt the same all over the place. The res of the body armor isnt high enough compared to what is usually the case with models in general in ffxi, and its kind of hard to make out the designs on the shoulders. As a first tip, id suggest trying to work a bit the texture to have higher resolution on the chain part, and maybe bring out more clear details on the shoulders; instead of having bumps everywhere, you might want to restrain a bit on that and put some stylish patterns or something.

Just my 2 cents ;p (These are just suggestions, if you don't like em, just continue on your inspiration )

PS. with the gloves you are wearing, it might be nice to have multiple layer shoulder armor pads, kinda like the gauntlets; that would really look awesome =)

well the actual look I am going for.... (a huge difference from my .....thing, I know). I am looking to make it RESEMBLE ....this piece..although since everything modeled in FFXI looks like crap graphics wise, I know it will not look this good, but I figured it could be kinda....a FFXI styled version

the armor itself looks like a proper mediaval armor. It's just the scale of the character... and the bumps... and the over all textures that look so bad ><

yeah, I know what you mean about the textures.... its just a pain to make actual chainmail especially when I am not just taking textures from FFXI and adding them to this.. I am using other textures. I may just keep this unfinished, untill I decide on a way to make it look how I want without sacrificing all the details of the textures... (like finding a way to use Hi-Res textures in FFXI) lol

You know what shocks me? After playing oblivion for PC, and with it only being out for a short time..theres SOOOO many mods for it... so I looked up the older game I used to play for it... morrowind...you know... people have actually replaced almost EVERY texture in the game from bodies, to the sky, and of course homes, etc....I am assuming the reason you cant do that in FFXI is because it is online for starters...or most importantly ...wasnt meant to be modded, whereas morrowind and oblivion COME with construction sets... but regardless, the mod community has come this far without any help so....maybe it IS possible in the future to completely overhaul FFXI?....just a thought

Oh, and on a sidenote....I noticed theres a jester TYPE of armor in the new .dat files...(not exactly but it has the neck thingy)...might we see, a Kefka outfit one of these days? lol. I never really liked him much but.... his laugh was absolutely hilarious, and JUST for that fact.... I'd like to see a kefka running around complete with the laugh motion and everything XD....once N/A modders figure out the motions stuff.

Re: a new piece of armor I may or may not release

in case of PC american games it easier for us to export models from games to industry standard softwares like 3dmax or maya. Like Sim City 4, you can download an official plug in to export/import models into 3d max... This isn't the case with FFXI.

what happen if you import a larger size textures into FFXI like 1024px? Will it go through?

Re: a new piece of armor I may or may not release

Ive HEARD that it only reads the size of the textures that is the same as FFXI...which is ....128x64 I think?? so.... from what Ive read on these forums (it was at LEAST 4 to 5 months ago mind you) it only reads the first 128 pixels of that 1024pixel file... although I may be wrong as Ive never done it but thats what I understood from it. I know some people have made higher res swords (the one from soul calibur comes to mind) and high resolution character models (penelope from FFXII comes to mind) both were in this forum somewhere but Im not sure what ever happened to the penelope one, or how he did that or if he even got it to work with FFXI but it DID look very promising.

Re: a new piece of armor I may or may not release

                    Hmmm.....

I agree with what the guys said here so far. Textures need to be fixed. And yes, getting it to look exactly like the oblivion one will be tough since most of the time, the thing you're trying to copy comes out looking crappy. I did some projects back then that dealt with morrowind armors and most didn't turn out good. The ebony set was the only decent looking one, but then again, to me it looked crappy since those gold textures looked funny. Deadric set was "lmao" for me. Really crappy. Then again, I did all of this at a early stage in my ffxi modding career xD. So I'll just say you'll have to spend a lot of time if you want to make it look like the original xD.

As for morrowind/oblivion, yes, they were made to be moddable hence the construction sets lol. I could easily wip up something in max and after a lot of testing, things come out looking really really good. It shows a person how skilled you are when designing weapons/armor. Now in FFXi, this isn't the case in my opinion since like people said, it wasn't made to be moddable ;P. If there is one game I like to mod, its the morrowind/oblivion series. Too bad I haven't got my hands on oblivion yet xD. Just scour their forums and sites xD.

I like this, no doubt. Not saying its crappy, but people are giving you some good feedback compared to the old days where people would say "nice" xD. I know there were a few that wanted actual feedback which is why I said this xD.

And yes, I look at ffxi forums once in a blue moon xD. Been dead on here for quite a long time haven't I lmao?

wow, hey hyades! I'd say lol... its cool though, Ive been dead for a while too lol... just kinda twitching on the floor at the moment as far as modding FFXI goes..just waiting for some awesome models to mess with from the new pack (dream on, I know lol) oh, and as for you not having oblivion yet... let me tell you... there may be SLIGHT things that totally piss me off (a HUGE lack of armor types, and weapons) ...quite literally only a handfull...as in,...maybe 6 sets of armor and weapons for heavy and 6 for light ....yeah no more medium armor, and TONS of things missing, like you cant move lanterns around anymore, etc etc.. small things like that. It doesnt really matter much though because the modding community has ALMOST added all of these already anyways so...I just cant wait for them to convert morrowind armor to oblivion!!! If they did that It'd be awesome, and if I could do that I'd be flat out hooked!!! (slowly testing the waters in the construction set). Heck they already have cloud, and sephiroths swords in oblivion, and a TON of other stuff from other games....only thing that I am getting sick and tired of seeing is the THOUSANDS of glass armor mods out there....its just sickening...its worse than seeing XXXXXsephirothXXXX50 in FFXI as a name... so yeah... just slightly off topic lol.....SOO...anyways yeah....I garantee you if you even remotely liked morrowinds style of play, you'll be hooked on oblivion!! and if not....with the right mods...you'll be hooked anyways XD hey hyades been to this oblivion mod site?
