  • Alpha in 3dsm

Well I think I cracked it. After searching around on these forums for a while for an answer, and just finding other people asking the same question, I figured it out for myself.

Had problems with alpha on my hair while exporting from 3dsm, like this:

Nasty border around my fringe... Ewww.

    How to export your alpha!

    Step 1.
Export each section of your model individually (face, head, body etc...), if you know which have alpha and which dont, then only export those with alpha mapping. Then get your character into a sexy position, and export the entire model ready for rendering.

    Step 2.
Next, open up each of the individual parts that you exported in Graphics Converter. The example is done using my face. Make sure to open the DDS file, as this contains the alpha mapping!

    Step 3.
Now, save the alpha layer of the DDS as a seperate file. Go along with the crowd and throw an a on the end of the file name. I know I do.

Congratulations! You've exported the alpha mapping! Repeat this with each individual model.

    Step 4
Load up Meta, open the full model. Select Panel then make sure Material Panel is checked (or just hit Ctrl+m). Double click on the first option in the window that pops up.

    Step 5.
Now you need to do a bit of guess work here, as each of these sections isn't named too greatly. I'm pretty sure that its the same order as in windower (Face, Head, Body, Hands, Legs, Feet, Main, Sub, Ranged) but I could well be wrong. Select the Ref option in the alpha section, and browse to the alpha map you saved way back in step 3.

    Step 6.
    Save, import into 3dsm, render.

    Alpha works!
Note: The alpha mapping wont actually show up (or not as the case may be) until you render, so don't panic!

      Awesome find Forx!

Yeah i've only been able to crack on the alpha a few times. I did find a way to crack the alhpa inside 3DS but its not as efficient as this and it's way more complicated. Although you should probably tell them about Phabin's tutorial with GC3 and how to get the actual alpha map from the texture.

lol, looking at your guy in meta reminded me of someone from Tekken 2.

        Grats on figuring it out.

Doesn't it give a damn good sense of accomplishment when you figure something out that noone else has helped you with? Prolly bettin that you learned a little more than just that, as well, even if it was only how to use Meta better.

Yep, it sure was a good feeling when it worked.

I'll add extracting the alpha after this party (just got thief to 37 for SJ -.-), might aswell make a full blown tutorial out of it.

Zigan: I do remember playing as someone with hair like that in tekken... But I cannot remember the name. Must of been implanted in my head subliminally, and the fact that my hair is red too. >.>

EDIT: And then it was a tutorial...

Nah it was him! He was the guy with the huge tube of hair who was a complete Guile wannabe... Ok, end off topic now. >.>

I'm going to keep messing around with this, see if there is a way to do all the alphas at once, rather than exporting each other them one by one.

Most excellent. I tried something along these lines before, but it hadn't occured to me to actually try to render it.

I don't tend to trawl through the long threads on killing ifrit myself as everything just seems to turn into a flame war... So I can't say I saw that.
