  • area .dat viewer?

awhile back we were discussing the possibility of modding furniture and areas and such and I remember talk of a viewer program for area .dats. I havent been able to find a link or any information on it though. In particular I need one to check beyond some rubble in pso'xja so it wouldnt be useful if the program had the same viewing limitations as a player. Anyone know if such a tool exists?

For those interested, i'm attempting to figure out if SE has left us any information on a possible 6th terrestrial avatar. Some people might know that in beaucedine glacier there are 6 towers, each with an avatar gate at the bottom. They are (in order on this map)

    1) unknown tower - promy vahzl.

    2) Phoenix

    3) Bahamut

    4) Diabolos - his gate is inside the shrowded maw a kind of lobby between the real mof the waking and the realm of dreams.

    5) Carbuncle

    6) Fenrir

I just want to check and see if the dead end hallway leads to another gate, or if promy vahzl is all there is.

(fun fact: if you draw a line between each of the outside towers, diabolos's tower ends up being in the middle of a pentagram. fun!

    The program is called ffxitool.

    Here's a link to the author's website.

    Here's a direct download link...

    Good luck.

EDIT: I just remembered that SA made a thread about mog house swapping. Here's a link to the thread... maybe it'll help.

cool thanks! but I cant figure out how to point it at a file, just either tells me there are no area files, or points at the random one with the railway tracks,

Well, I decided to open the area viewer and looked at Beaudecine Glacier, but sadly the results were very underwhelming...it appears that the DATs that generate those rooms are stored somewhere else, and trying to find them in the Area viewer only allows you to view placeholders....you'd probably have to track down the separate file they occur in to find out...

If you haven't tried it all ready, there are instructions included in the thread by starving artist.

Use the +- keys on the keypad to tab through the files. There are many blanks and you have to skip about the first hundred to reach the real files. If I remember right, holding down ctrl while pushing the +- will cause it to skip faster and scroll through the zone faster. Hit the home key if you get lost exploring a zone. The inside rooms are not part of the glaciar zone...that's why it loads a different zone when you enter there in game. You will have to find the specific underground zones. Beware that lightening is different in this viewer which can fool you when looking for a wall color you saw in game. Took me forever to recognize Diabolo's battle arena with the different colors.

Yes CTRL skips 100 or so at a time. and also makes you fly faster. The only problem is. Nothign else other than the map is loaded. Supposedly I read the EWH Viewer or whatever could load a Zone and NPC's and stuff, But I could never get it to work

Only person I've seen get it to work is Starving Artist..and I think the bare minimum is jp ffxi version.
