  • Thoughts: SE's Mod Involvement

I've been browsing through alot of the customizing people have been doing over the last few days and I've seen alot of really amazing and innovative things that people have designed and created. I'm left to wonder why SE has yet to acknowledge any of the fine work people are doing to make the game experience more enjoyable.

I mean, I think anyone can agree with me when I say that many of the default models and textures used get downright bland and repetitive. We spend hours on end levelling and moving up to harder and harder areas, and what do we get to see? The exact same crabs, lizards, goblins, and others that we've been levelling on since we began, only differently named and they hit harder.

It's somewhat obvious that SE doesn't feel the need to invest themselves in creating new textures/skins for old monsters, but with a mod community such as it is, they certainly could do things like hold contests for people to create new skins that could be incorporated into the game. Taking crabs as an example [everyone loves crabs!] imagine the regular blue crabs on the ferries, the ubiquitous pink crabs populating the beaches of Valkurm, and maybe Tonka's Fenrir crabs patrolling Boyahda Tree. Now extend the same vison to lizards, crawlers, goblins, and other beastmen. Makes the game seem much more attractive, no?

Now how about equipment models and textures? Has anyone ever put on a level 60+ piece of armor, but it looks exactly like something you'd worn in the dunes? I'm sure we all have, but with a little more official support for the modding community I'm sure this kind of thing could be avoided. I don't think there's much that's more disappointing than hunting or farming for some rare or expensive item, only to equip the blandest, most whitebread model ever. [*cough*maneater*/cough*]

I'm interested to know what other people think of this, maybe you've got another spin on the subject. However, no matter what you think, if you really want to let SE know about it you need to use the Feedback tool in POL. From the main menu click Help and Support > Support > Email Support > Comments and Suggestions. This is the most direct route we have to communicate with SE about things like this, and the best chance we have of making changes happen.

It will never happen pure an simple.

Mean there isn't really much to say other than that. Most will happen is you run a higher chance of getting yourself banned.

That or its possible for them to start cracking down, and making it so we can no longer mod.

As great as it would be, they do NOT want anyone messing with their game. It's best that they not know (if they don't already) the extent of the changes that people have made. I also wanted to say thanks for mentioning my Fenrir Crab XD

they know what's going on. the developers read the forums for feedback. i'm sure of it. i think they just choose to ignore what's harmless. but they cant aknowledge it either

Right. I mean the extent of what's going on. Though I'm sure they know pretty much everything we've been up to. Maybe I'm a spy!

Also we are handicapped by the PS2.. I hope that SE changes their stance on it when the sales results are posted. Sony knows they screwed up and SE is letting them know just how much. Once japanese take hold of the X-box and see what its capable of in regards to FFXi.. we'll see a shift in graphics and capabilities.

              Re: Thoughts: SE's Mod Involvement

I think some of you have misunderstood my idea. I'm not talking about SE giving the modding communities license to mod their own games, [though it would be nice] or tools for the same purpose. [again, nice] But what I'm thinking is that SE could find some of the new textures and models that people have produced and put them into everyone's game, not just the PC players.

ie. SE takes this suggestion to heart and holds a "Crab Contest". Tonka wins and a patch is released. Now the crabs in Boyahda are now Fenrir Crabs! Pink crabs came in second and are put into Valkurm. etc.

The main thing I'm trying to address here is the lack of variety in the monster and equipment models. We're all getting bored of the same old repeated monsters, weapons, and armor, aren't we?

No doubt. I was just complaining on another board on the lack of color in most of the game pre-CoP. It's one of the reasons I make mods (which reminds me, I have a new Taru RSE to post some time soon...I'm a magic-wielding tarutaru, not Santa's elf).

BTW you dont have to fight the same old monsters.. Some people are just lazy is all ^^
I like the contest idea though.

Anyways back at hand... Well I do agree, that the fact that all the monsters tend to get repetetive, the contest I idea is good, but I don't know if SE would just let they're work of art into a small collab >_> dirty bastards... AHEM! anyways though, but I agree... like the leather armor = Lizard armor, if you know what i mean >.<.

But hey not only armor models could "we" release but weapons and all sorts of things, we have VRS so, in sense we have alot in our hands to keep in mind.

I get the feeling I've misunderstood what you've said here.

Aside from the obvious resolution handicap, how is PS2 limited?

and what do you mean by 'we'll see a shift in graphics and capabilities'? Do you mean in this gen of consoles, or moving to the next?

How bad of an idea is it that sony isn't taking a cue from M$ and Nintendo about creating their own online infrastructure? For the most part, Xbox online gaming is HUGE easy and fun. Mostly because from the developer's POV there's no need to go about creating brand new network architectures for each game they want to put online. Personally, if I were a developer I'd rather use a nice pre-existing online service like XboxLive than try to build one from scratch for PS2 or PS3. Don't get me wrong, I'm picking PS3 over 360 for my personal console, but I really think this decision is going to hurt PS3.

Basically the Ps2's limited graphical capabilites kept FFXI From looking as brilliant as Say FFX. The Ps2's internet capabilities meant that Processing server side information and client side info needed to be fast and lag free. Part of the reason FFXI is capped for dial Up. Ps2 also meant that textures implemented client side would only strain the client side machine.
I can do whatever I want client side as far as .dats go simply because My machine is handling the processing and the textures. BUT when you increase things server side it can put a strainon both machines.

I have a 256 MB video card and 1 gig ram.
PS2 has 4 MB dedicated to video memory^^. PS'2 Memory card has more memory capability then its host system does.

So the more green blue purple pink crabs we haev on screen the more data needs to be sent. So that will tax server and client. Which is part of the reason SE hasnt increased mob count, and variation.

If im my PC.. I wanna push that 256 MB and 1 gig DDR to the max. GIMME all the textures and renders possible.

If im PS2.. Im a little girly man who can only handle 4mb at a time please dont hurt me....

This is totally out of topic I bet but... I would love to see areas, armors, and weapons made to look nice like the ones SE gave us in CoP. I don't care if the players or SE does it.

                              Re: Thoughts: SE's Mod Involvement

Well, I'd imagine that since PS2 has less memory space to work with the possibilities for working with the textures would be:
                              1. PS2 has smaller, thus lower-res textures since the display itself is low-res. [fairly likely]
                              2. Textures specific to certain areas within zones can be streamed from the HDD.
ie. when you go upstairs in BT there's no reason to leave the spider model/texture festering in the memory until you come back down. Likewise you don't need the fly model downstairs, so it would be loaded when you go up.

Not to mention that SE has been doing texture acrobatics with PS2 from the start so who knows what other crazy crap they've got packed in there.

Another thing is I'm not suggesting that you'd go to a zone and 2 crabs standing next to each other have different textures [requiring more video memory] but rather mobs from different zones have different textures. [which simply requires more HDD space, and seriously what else is using space on your PS2 HDD?] Also, having mobs that look different area-to-area wouldn't have an impact on client-server traffic becausethe new models would be downloaded through a patch or version update and stored on the local machine.

I will admit that I feel sorry for the PS2 players, since they're stuck with horrid graphics no matter what advances are made, but that's the tradeoff you make when you pick the console version of a game over the PC version. I'm just hoping that when the 360 version comes out the PC version gets an optional tune up for people like you and me who do have the graphical mean machines to push out all those extra 1s and 0s.
