  • Experimental Project: Advanced Cartography (Map Modding & Construction)

    Alright.

VRS (Virtual Reality Studio) has been translated into English now thanks to
    Kilandor and Co.

    I couldn't be happier.

For the past several months though, I've been wanting to create my own
    FFXI Movie or potential series.

Instead of doing it the somewhat "bootlegged" way... Just FRAPSing everything that runs on
by, I would rather have tried to "Script" my own cutscenes. Idealy, this would make creating
an FFXI movie / series relatively simple. You could even voice act and dub your voice into
    it if you liked.

I first explored this idea and came to the conclusion that in order to do this, one would either
need to create some kind of "Private Server", or find a way to run an OFFLINE instance of
FFXI to tinker around with. Creating a Private Server is somewhat of a long way off though,
and it would take alot of power to run one as well. That would also detail getting ahold of
the host files, which as a friend of mine said, are most likely self-terminating and would be
    hard to obtain.

I know eventually a way would most likely be found, because that's how people are after all.
But for now, I'd like to explore the idea of Advanced Cartography. I've seen some of the
basic Cartography done in FFXI... Marking routes or areas where NMs spawn and the like. But
when I say Advanced Cartography, I mean building zones from the ground UP.

    Entire cities... Forests... Villages...

Essentially, Level & Area Construction / Modding.

    Is this possible?

I have a town in mind I'd like to build... basically... for the sole purpose of building a town.
Perhaps it could serve as a "Stage" for an FFXI video. I have a good idea in mind as to what
I'd like to create. The only thing is how to go about creating it.

Of course there'd be alot of things to take into consideration.

    Setting the Vana'diel Time properly.

Different .BMP images for the sky as it changes according to time of day.

Aligning and Scripting "Door" NPCs properly.

The "Shortname" of the Map (Like how Bastok Markets is "BastokMark")

    Setting the BGM (Background Music).

And something Nicolette mentioned-- The proper setting of X, Y, & Z Coordinates when
    you Login and Logout.

All of this would play a factor most likely, but I'd still like to know how this is done.

I know the Map / Zones are nothing more than .DATs themselves... Can they be opened in
VRS or are they a different format?

Essentially, you see what I'm getting at with this, right? I want to explore if this is possible
or not... Kilandor? Selenity? Hyrist? Tazirai? ...Anybody got any ideas about this?

(Note: I'm interested in doing this in the name of art really. I'm not trying to make SE angry
    or anything.)

Well PolUtility lets you look at many of the .dats in the game (including zones) and I'm not quite sure what it all does as I cannot understand that paricular program to save my life

POLUtil only lets you look at the textures of zones best I can tell. Devifoxx is talking about looking at and editing the 3D images of zone DATs much like we do with equipment DATs currently.

Aye. Indeed it does only let you view textures.

And yes. That's what I mean, Rones.

I have a nice city I'd like to build as a "project".

Aye. I've used that before. To me it seems kinda... "buggy".

And I was a bit dissapointed that it couldn't load the Skies or weather effects.

Has anyone tried loading the maps in VRS?

(I can't open VRS, it seems to ask me for a User Name and Password)

Got it. Hmmm... I don't... think it can open Maps. Atleast not that I know of, but we'll see.

In any case, anyone else have any thoughts or ideas on this?

Re: Experimental Project: Advanced Cartography (Map Modding & Construction)

First off, I can tell you this:

You will not find one file for the model for the area files. The trees, brushes, all of those are duplicated files edited slightly with the actual information provided with the areas. I am sure some of you with lagy computers have seen trees that shift slightl as you get closer to them. Some of these are just loaded parts of the file kicking in late.

This is why I beleive the "Ultimate Moghouse Expansion" still is possible. However the model to load the door file is imbetted int the actual moghouse file itself, (as its set to trigger the door opening sequence) and must be located.

Devifoxx, I have to warn you, what you are talking about is seriously breaking the TOS, enough to get SquareEnix on your ass and cancel your account entirly. We would have to do some serious recoding, not to mention find acess to ther sever-side data which contains most of the actual filing. Not to mention settup a network, and a crack program to load into.

Is it possible, yes. But it is an undertaking that could take years in development, and will risk the accounts of all those involved SEVERILY.

I understand that myself or anyone else involved runs that risk. Not to be deterred
however. Isn't .DAT modding armors quote "bad enough"? I guess the only time it would
actually be truly bad is if someone modded the original maps to their gain.

I.E. Taking the "Al'Taieu" Map and physically constructing a "bridge" to get to the north side
of the map. Taking advantage of the fact that in-game movement is handled client-side and
                  not server-side.

I noticed about the whole "multiple pieces" note you mentioned. Probably why if you go
to Konschtat Highlands / Tahrongi Canyon / La Thiene Plateau and approach the crag from
a distance, it's only partially loaded, but when you finally reach it, the top of the crag loads.

Same rules apply from Qufim Island's "Delkfutt's Tower".

I'm simply trying gather information as to what it would "take", per se. The mechanics of it,
                  and how it would work.

You have to admit however, it's an interesting idea, is it not?

Loading maps(zones) into VRS doesn't work. I tried that along time ago. Likely this will never become possible, nor if I knew a way I would not likely make it public. Because this would create such issues as possible major cheating. You could edit a door or wall to just walk past.

Sorry, but I doubt even the jappanese to create such a program. And private servers, take major programing and understandign of packets etc. Hardware wise they usually don't take alot to run.

the so called FFXI mod community never did work for me...

i registered, but i keep getting something that says my email address is assigned to someone, then i ask for a password recovery, and it says that there is no account registered with my email address.....

                        i hate that site....

Lol, well did you think about trying to conact me? If you actually read in the Community Discussion forum. The very top post says "Validating And Password Recovery". With Instructions. And also telling how the curren trecovery doesn't work because its a bug in the BB. Which has been fixed. But no update by the Creator yet. I've had 6 people e-mail me so far. So obviously your just trying to get VRS. And leech and nothing else. Or you coulda have easily found that. So really the only one to blame is yourself. Since I have a system in place very simple for it to be fixed. Nor did you even attempt to contact me here.

That post has been there since 2 das after the fourm was created.
