  • Two Days Of Fish, Two Newbies, A Nice Refreshing Change

The day before yesterday, I was out at Knightswell fishing up those gil making moat carps. Someone in Scale Mail came up to me and watched me for a few casts. I ignored him at first figuring he was just taking a look at my clamming swimsuit that I always wear when I fish.

<newplayer> Can you earn gil from fishing?
    <me> Yes you can.

He was quiet for a bit then sent me another /tell. It seems all his previous attempts had failed at catching a fish so asked me what he was doing wrong. I did a /sea on him (he was 15 with no sub) then told him my method of fishing with the keyboard and he pulled out his fishing rod. It took a cast or two to get the hang of it but I /clapped when he reeled in a fish and traded him some of the excess insect paste I was carrying. He was thankful for my help and offered to help me in the future if I needed it. I told him the only way to pay me back was to help someone else in the future. He agreed then he had to go and I fished until the limit.

Yesterday rolls around and after leveling a lowbie job of mine, I headed back to Knightswell with more fishing in mind. I get a few casts done, reeled in some nice moats and get a surprise to see a galka pop right in front of me after catching a fish. After a quick search, I found he wasn't as new as the other player that asked me about fishing but still new enough. It seems he was having trouble getting the hang of fishing as well. Again I gave directions on my method with the keyboard. He was glad for the help but was more curious how to do it with the xBox controller. I apologized and told him I had no experience with the xbox but that he could probably find the fishing tips for that controller online.

Amidst all my ramblings here, I do sort of have a point. I just think it is very refreshing to see new players taking an interest in finding ways to earn their own gil instead of begging like that one person in Sandy that was shouting for someone to give them 1million gil. It makes me proud to wear my Mentor symbol when people take it as a sign that I'm willing to answer questions that don't involve "Give me gil" or requests for PLing.

Something about fishing seems to bring out the best in people. Not just newbies wondering how to make their own gil, but just chatting with people on the ferry, applauding those catching legendary fish and what have you. I guess it's just the nature of how fishing works.

I got a lot of chance to tractor and raise people on the ferry ^^ Not a good thing I suppose... but still fun meeting people hehe

I've met a lot of people in my fishing trips around Vana'diel, from watching over XP parties on the shores of Valkurm and Qufim to chatting with passersby in Zeruhn Mines and Rabao.

I also get some really amusing /tells when people see me fishing in really bizarre places like Dragon's Aery or Lufaise Meadows. It's a fantastic way to meet people, since you're not threatening or competing with them.
