  • To all you fishers out there

Around two months ago I put a new fishing database on the net called Kida’s FFXI Fishing Database because I had some spare time and wanted to give an alternative resource to the FFXI Fishing community. For a long time Clanwind hadn’t been updated and I couldn’t really find any other site that had the same usefulness. I liked Fisherman’s Rod but that wasn’t what I was looking for either so I decided to make my own site. A new database that would be updated and a way for me to combine my work, developing software, with my hobby, playing Final Fantasy.

Since I got the database up and running I have had almost 50.000 hits and these days I get a bit more than 1.000 hits every day. I haven’t implemented much statistics yet so I can’t tell you how many are uniqe. I have received almost 100 emails with corrections and updates to the database or new ideas for the site. I have tried to investigate all information I have gotten and somethings have been easy to comfirm while others have been a hassle. I try to get the most correct information but it has been impossible for me to test everything on my own. None the less a lot of information has been corrected and I would like to thank everybody who has helped getting the database updated.

At first I only wanted to make an alternative to Clanwind but as the work progressed I found that there was a lot of information that would be usefull to any fisher and that I had an opportunity to display all this information in a way that would make sense and easily accesible. First of all a lot of this information was about the fish themselves. Weight and length was relevant with the new fishing ranking and exclamation marks where something that a lot of people had asked about. This could be implemented in the database without much work all though I still need some information about sizes.

A guide is always good to have and if you are an avid fisher you might know Akirus who has made a more than excellent guide on fishing. I asked him if I could use it on my site and he agreed to let me use it. I would like to use this opportunity to thank him once again, since my site is so much more with this guide.

I also wanted people to be able to find the spots to fish. A lot of the fishingspots are not so easy to find. Crystal Spring comes to mind. So I decided to make an area section. I wanted people to get a map clearly pointing out where to go. Also I know had a place to display information about monsters that can be caught in an area. I decided to show all the fish of the area too and then a small description of the fishing spot. So far I have almost all the maps. I haven’t drawn the excact fishing spots though since this takes a while. I will have to fire up photoshop soon and get on with it. Also writing a description takes a while and is not always easy to do.

I have made sections describing the various rods and another section describing the baits and lures. You will be able to find recipes on how to make all the gear in the game. I still want to describe all the gear and tell of different ways to obtain it (like NPC’s and mobs) but this is yet to come.

Finally I collected all recipes that include fish so that when you find information on a fish you will also be able to find a good way to put it to use rather than just sell it at the AH. There are many fish that will help you level cooking and alchemy and why not use the resources you fish up.

So this is what has happened in the last couple of months. There are still a lot of things that I want to get done like fx a guild point system so the users will be able to identify the current guild fish. Also a lot of information is still needed before I feel that the database is as it should be.

But if you would like to use the database I would be very happy. You can check it out at http://kida.theill.com and see how you like it.
Years ago I created Final Fishing so people playing FFXI could easily find information on how to fish. If you know of the site I hope you enjoyed using it and it helped you.
Now I am trying to do the same for FFXIV. I plan on making this database for fishing, harvesting and mining while getting all the information that may be interesting for crafters as well. I hope you will take a look and that you find it interesting:

ah! well if that's the case, you might be interested in a nifty little feature of our forums called the user journal (under My Settings).

              Thanks Yyg!

Took a quick look at it and that might just be the thing I am looking for. Thanks for the heads up... I might make a Journal in the near future ^^
