Under the new fishing system, with fatigue limits, and all that has changed - no, it's not worth it unless you have a serious nack for fishing on a computer.

I have my Lu's and its an awesome rod in all respects, but the entire fishing consept changed so radically in feb 2005 that you have to ask yourself where you want to go with the rod.

This is the only craft that you have to spend a ridiculous amount of time into. It used to be ok, because the rewards would follow from it (gil), but these days, with all the RMT's around, the echonomy is so badly screwed up that you're unable to buy your selected gear of choise, even as a 100 fisherman unless you're working on supporting crafts and farming NM's in addition.

SE has failed over and over again to deal with RMT's and farmbots. In the end, if you ask 9/10 people why they quit, the answer will be someting of the likes of things being too pricey / taking too long to get a comfy set of gear.

And in the middle of all this, Lu Shang rod gives you a minuscule income, compared to all other crafts, it's by far the most dangerous and time consuming craft, and is no longer justified spending months on, in my opinion. Level a thief instead and go farmin'.

the moat quest in sandy took so long even when players were botting/buying them. under the new system. i believe that has doubled.

kutch's advice is how i feel about the new system. a waste of my time in the end. because a lvl 20 crafter make more then my fishing skill of 60 does.

When you get get a million gil from the fish you handed it it was alot better, now then cash you get doesn't even cover the cost of insect paste.

If you enjoy fishing and have any plans whatsoever to raise it above level 55, Lu Shang's Fishing Rod is pretty much required to keep your sanity. As for those who say you can't make money fishing... assuming I fished close to my fatigue limit each day (I don't, but if I *DID*), with the support crafts I have available, I can turn out about 200K worth of fish in about 4 hours of fishing, give or take, depending on what I'm fishing for. It won't make you rich, but it can definitely keep your bills paid.

It's no Ebisu, but it is definantly required to get it.

Fishing in SSG with Lu rod I pulled in 9 Grims, 3 stacks of Nebs, 2 stacks of Bream, 2 coral fragments, and a Damp Scroll in an HOUR.

Crafting everything but the Grims and scroll I turned close to 250-300K PROFIT that sold over the weekend. Everything total came to roughly 500K total.

72 total fish/items in 1 hour? im sorry i find that hard to believe under the new system. that would almost mean every cast had a fish. an every fish had little to no fight.

not only that your talking about crafting them to make even more gil. thats some high alhcemy skills, an cooking skills to pull that off. something the OP might not have. an just selling the fish back isnt bringing in much more then 100k

if you're serious about fishing, around 60-70 you'll hit the point where it's really frustrating without Lushang's. It's either getting the rod or quit fishing.

Hum. Just about every cast *does* get a bite with this new system. I've never had any problem with bites until I get fatigued, although I suppose this may not be true for certain catches. Spell-check, commas, and apostrophes are your friends, and you may be spending a little too much time with Mr. Period.

Fishing may not be as profitable as other crafts, but it certainly is more fun and doesn't cost so much to skill up. The profit does seem to come, however, from using support crafts to convert fish into gil, according to experienced fishermen.

I fish, and Moat Carp is still a good profit.. Knock on wood. But really, you should try to get into as much crafting ass possible. It's a good thing to have money around. So why not have multiplle crafting skills? If fishing isn't pulling in income, you always have other ones to choose from.

                          Re: The Moat carp fest!

I got to level 53 fishing before the major changes and .. yeah, it's pretty much required that I get Lu's to continue. Frankly, all the other rods suck now. Composite rod is afflicted with the painfully slow fatigue/catch rate that synthetic rods share now and still has a major problem with throwing out "too small" catches. Mithran rod's timer is so short now that you need ninja reflexes to pull in your catch before you lose the line. I thought the new Halcyon rod was the compromise I needed, but this piece of junk has frustrated me to no end with seemingly random line snaps/breakages. It seems to be right on the borderline where it can pull in things in the subligar, bream, noble lady weight range but can still sometimes break on those same items. A few lost shrimp lures and rogue rigs later and I'm ready to throw the thing out. Any other rod can only catch small fish reliably without breaking, and you still have to be constantly vigilant for rusties or tougher bites.

I'm still slugging through this quest (ever so slowly whenever I get the patience) because I want to be able to fish for my own sushi and taco ingredients and I don't want to waste the time I've already invested into leveling fishing. For anyone who doesn't have similar compelling reasons to pursue the craft, I wouldn't recommend it.

                            Re: The Moat carp fest!

Level 10 MNK with 2 points in fishing. In Windy, I use strictly small worms. In one hour, I got 2 gold carps, 27 moat carps and 22 crayfishes. I also got 1 rusty legging and 5 rusty buckets, but I view them as a way to pay for my small worms.

It's 8k a stack on Windy AH for moat carp. My haul made me a modest 17K for one hour of just mindlessly twiddling my controller. Is it worth it? At these levels, yes. But once I am high enough with TH, then really, I could probably farm a lot faster in this over inflated economy. There's other methods of obtaining gil for minimal effort.

Arrowwood lumber is 5K a stack. With enough skill to get consistent HQ results on the right day, you could probably move 50K worth of lumber in 2 hours. Same goes for Ash lumber.

Black ink are also in demand. You can easily buy nebis off of fishermen in an oversaturated economy, HQ the black ink and put them up on those inflated prices and watch gil literally flood your MH. It's insane.

So, is fishing worth it? If you already have 100 skill points with the accompanying woodworking skill as well as a 60 in cooking and various other professions (And accomlished this before the change in fishing, mind you!) then, yes, you too can experience Icemage's results.

For everyone else, go look elsewhere.

Edit: FYI, IMO I believe fishing was a lot easier before the change. It was so easy, hence SE made the change, but I view it as too little, too late.

                              Re: The Moat carp fest!

I guess it's only really profitabble at lower levels? Or I guess just on Midgard where I am? For me Insect Paste is 1.5k, not bad at all, even for my 15/MNK, so I go ahead and buy about 5 stacks and then start fishing, by the time I finish one and half stacks I have one stack of moat carps and like 3 tricolored carps, and so I go visit the AH since I'm full on items anyway. Lo and behold 10k for a stack of Moat Carps....let's do the math now; 1,500*1.5=2250 10,000-2250=7750 gil in profit.... I dunno I guess it's just at low levels and my server, but it's a great way to do things atm....and I totally used the calculator for all that math X3

Edit: Oh err...this was in the span of like 20-30 minutes before I left for Christmas lunch this morning...I kinda am still getting used to fishing, so I lose stuff sometimes.

Thanks to Roguewolf for the sig. :D
