need help with "hot and cold"

Last night I finally tried the game "Hot and cold". I thought I was close to the spot but all I kept getting was 3 little dots whenever I dug. 1st, do the dots mean i'm not even close to the spot? will my chocobo react differently when im around the correct spot? Lastly, If my chocobo's digging skills are not good will I be able to dig up the treasure when I do find it?

According to the update info there are some new areas to dig in, but I wasn't given the option for new chocographs so I don't have an information on that.
