Anyone can raise a chocobo as long as they can get an egg. I'm not planning on levelling my mules--just spending a few bucks on stealth meds run down (get telecrystal on the way), D2 back.

I have never used a San d'Orian carrot on either of my chocobos and I've never had them stat-down after walking.

Well, there's a limited amount of time to raise the chocobo to maximum. From that projection, you won't even break Impressive Endurance by the time he's forced to retire. However, if your chocobo is colored, or you can get it to learn something (unlikely at sub Discernment), he'll be worthwhile just the same.

If you wanted to you could feed it almost never... Just use the rest care plan to restore its energy instead and feed it an el cheapo Gysahl Green once in a while for affection.

... of course feeding it almost never or only with gysalh is NOT the way to go about things if you want to raise stats

Everything you check on your bird, it's always starving. So what's the lazy stable master doing to your chocobo huh?

And you see how high from the ground the chick's bedding is? Why the hell would they put the egg *that* high off the ground >.>

                Re: Breeding a Hybrid Chocobo.

Okay, I gots me a question about chocobo hybrids. I'm planning on breeding my yellow chocobo with my friend's black chocobo. Both of their highest stats are strength and endurance, with my chocobo's at "a bit deficient" and my friend's chocobo's being some higher level (might be first class, I'm not sure). But in addition to having their offspring inherit their strength and endurance, I would also like it to have high discernment so that I can teach it some abilities. So here's my question: If I breed these two chocobos using the VCS Hiking plan (which raises the discernment of the chocobos' offspring), what will the results be? Will I end up with a chocobo that has good discernment, but poor strength and endurance? Or maybe it will be the other way around? Or perhaps I'll get a chocobo with strength, endurance, and discernment all at substandard but one of them will just end up dropping to poor if I focus on one over the other? Or maybe this combination will result in the birth of a chocobo of a completely different color altogether? Anyone know?

I don't think the status carries over. Your chick will start at poor everything. Abilities can be inherit. Not sure about personality.

You mean that the stats wouldn't be inherited with that particular VCS plan?

                      Re: Breeding a Hybrid Chocobo.

I think what is inherited is an "affinity" for a particular stat. With respect to the "dates", I'm assuming that this is how it works:

                      1. For each of the stats there is a base 50% chance of "inheritance" from either parent.
                      2. Selecting a date plan that, for instance, encourages inheritance of the sire's physical attributes skews the probability in favor of the father on both Strength and Endurance, but leaves the mental statistic inheritance alone.
                      3. The baby chocobo's statistical growth rate with respect to the inherited statistics is dependent upon the level of the statistic that the parent it inherited that stat from had, so if the chocobo inherits daddy's Strength and daddy has 1st Class strength, the baby will have an accelerated growth rate with respect to strength, but if he inherit's mommy's Poor strength, he'll have a deccelerated growth rate in that statistic. Basic eggs most likely have statistical affinities based on one of the "breeds" that S-E has established, but it is highly possible that there is no such thing as breed except with respect to "new" eggs (i.e. 1st Generation chocobos that are not the result of an in-game breeding).

Keep in mind that I'm just speculating--I don't work for S-E so I don't know anything for sure.

                        Re: Breeding a Hybrid Chocobo.

No, all chicks start off with poor, however the plans increase the likelihood of them developing better stats quicker as well as other traits and abilities such as auto-regen, gallop etc.

I just breed my better than avg STR and END choco (female yellow) with a black male with abit deficient STR. Hoping for the color more so than the stats. I will continue that line with the focus on physical stats.

I am also now raising an egg bought in jueno on my mule, to test the building of discernment and receptivity then switching to build str/end once it learns an ability. To use for breeding purpose, hoping to have all around avg stats by the time its forced to retire.

                          Re: Breeding a Hybrid Chocobo.

                          Chick may inherit at least:

                          - Personality (which also implies a natural tendency towards whatever stat the personality corresponds to)

                          - Weather preference

It's also possible it may inherit an ability, or colour, but these two I am not sure on yet.

I got a black-tipped adolescent out of two yellow chocos... so maybe they've done this breeding business as a fairly complex mechanism where it's like genetics: some animals can be carriers for a trait... ooooooor it might be completely random

Well thanks for the info but... I'm still not exactly sure what VCS plan I should go with! <_<

Maybe I'll just go with the one that increases strength and endurance just to be safe, then I'll be sure to breed my next chocobo with one of high discernment.
