And having it dislike me, what will that affect?
Hi, with my first bird I had it carry packages, and it started dropping them (lost patience). It didn't learn any abilities because I didn't raise any of the discernment for that to happen. And it would have eventually ran away on me, as the affection dropped.

This time around I'm keeping track of the "points" on the bird, as per the chart that SE posted. With the acception of affection and energy, the other categories can each gain a "point" from basic care. When the chick gets older, the "point" system seems to double and triple (at least thats the way Im charting it).

My plan is to not work it hard every single day, but rather to have some days of basic plan to get the stats back up.

    Hope this helps you.

      Re: Breeding a Speedy Chocobo

About Sharug and Azouph greens .. I fed my first chocobo azouph greens on perky days to make it "more receptive" to them. Now his standard diet is zegham + azouph, munching contentedly on the former and gobbling up the latter. Between the two he always goes from starving to completely full, and back up to parent affection if he dropped a level.

My alt's chocobo's favorite food is carrots, and I fed her vomp + 2x san d'orian for a long time. She always gobbles both down. Later in her life I started introducing sharugs into her diet because I had some leftover from gardening and I was having a hard time maintaining affection while using the more strenuous care plans. The sharug greens had almost no effect on her hunger or affection levels. I don't remember for sure the message I got when using them, but I think it was a very default-sounding "Your chocobo eats the Sharug Greens."

So I'm wondering .. are Sharug Greens much less potent than Azouph Greens, or does the chocobo's food preference just play that big of a role in determining how effective the food is? Both?

With both Sharug and Azouph, my chocobos seem to prefer Azouph to Sharug--they "Gobble" Azouph Greens. DuchesseRose "gobbled" Vomp carrots, but SolarWind only "munches contentedly" on them. Both chocobos only "eat" Sharug greens. I merely feed them what they like the best for affection.

My theory is that different chocobos like different kinds of things since I got the disparate results for the Vomp Carrots. Feed your chocobo the green he/she likes the best for best results... Again, just a theory.

I have been feeding mine a mix of paste and greens. Should I be feeding more paste since she is a baby?

I fed my chocobo only pastes since these are apparently good for babies--otherwise, why would we have them at all? Of course, I don't have any solid evidence that there is any difference between feeding paste and feeding regular food. Duchesse received a mixture of pastes and regular food, but SolarWind was only fed pastes as a baby.

              Day 7 update

Checked VCS, said my chocobo was crying, gave me white hankerchief. When is a good time to give it baack?

Anyway, it still has poor all stats, wants to be with me all the time. I took it for 3 walks, and it seems that it took more stamina than normal O_o

Anyway, one carrot paste and one Az Green was enough to make it completely full.

My chocobo got "irretated" when I watch over him while he's bored >_<
Should I just make him race and stop watching totally instead?

When the bird eats either carrot pastes or shraug I get: I hope we can make this into a fine blah, blah blah. I figured that's a good sign.

I'm feeding the bird 2 carrot pastes now, since affection level is parent.

Once he turns into a teen I'm switching to whole vomp carrots. I'l probably alternate between all carrots and then carrots and shruag combo, since the teen level care plans affect affection more.

Oh, and when I checked it, it seemed to be unwell, but it wasn't "sick."

As I said, it had been crying the entire night. Is this one of those expected things that I'm going to have to deal with? -_-

Yeah, the crying all night happens around day 7. You just hold on to the handkerchief for 1 game day and talk to the person again, they'll take it back and like on day 10 get the message that the chocobo is sleeping well and all.

The handkerchief when you trade it in though seems to have two conditions you can wait 1 game day and trade or rent a chocobo which will change it to a dirty handkerchief and trade it in. It's unknown that effect the two have if any.

Thanks, Macht. Is the resulting message I get different if it's a dirty hanky? Now I'm a bit paranoid to rent a chocobo -_-

I've heard that if you wait too long with the hanky, the handler will give up on you and give him something else. I was paranoid about the dirty hanky thing too, so I just hung around town for a bit and went out to kill some various low-level mobs in Gustaberg. I don't know what effect, if any, it will have.

The handler always says this. It's the description of how the chocobo eats the food that is of interest. You'll get "<Chocobo> eats the <food>", "<Chocobo> munches contentedly on the <food>", and "<Chocobo> gobbles up the <food> in a single gulp!"

The last one is what I assume to indicate a "preference" for that type of food, and that's what I go by. I never got anything but "eats" with paste, however.

My second chick is 13 days old and never cried at night. I'm wondering if the crying chick is only for the first one so we can get the whistle.

Anyone try to match up their second bird to the whistle you got from the first one?

I haven't, but to change the chocobo the whistle calls, it costs 500gil. You may use your chocobos VCS Registration Card to call a retired chocobo by trading the card to the handler. Each time your chocobo's attributes go up, you'll need to reregister it as the whistle "remembers" what the chocobo's attributes were when you assigned the whistle to call it.
