  • Chocobos and your Allegiance

Because I'm sure someone will eventually ask these questions, and because I'd rather come up with a better answer than: "Um... I like pie," I present the following discoveries:

    1. Changing your residence, (I.E. renting a room), will not allow you to access your chick from a new town.

    2. Changing your national allegiance, (walking up to the old counter in Heaven's Tower, Metalworks, etc. and switching nations), will not allow you to access your chick from a new town.

As I write this, I am currently facing a long and boring walk from Windurst back to Bastok to check on my 'little yellow piggy'. I'm not exactly sure how you get the other chocobo stories to tell your chick other than the one in the home town you started raising it, but I can say for certain that switching nations and stables doesn't do it, (at least in the chick phase of its development). Perhaps when it's a teenager and I get to choose more zone options to "Take a Walk" in, these other stories will be obtainable.

Hope this helps someone else out.

*Note that you cannot trade another egg to a chocobo trainer once the chocobo raising process has begun. Also, the process of raising a chocobo must be continued in the nation where the egg was traded.

As much as it pains me to say it, you might actually have to raise a chocobo in each nation to acquire the story from that trainer.

This might be to encourage breeding among players, or perhaps just as a timesink for the dedicated chocobo breeder.

Or, perhaps the take a walk thing will happen. Maybe?

          Re: Chocobos and your Allegiance

Well, the actual purpose of my "investimigation" was to figure out how to get additional stories. Although Macht and Herrisa are right that I probably should've read the patch notes before I spent 40k changing allegiances back to Windurst. (Ah well, finally got rank 10 in all three nations, I guess it was time to head back home anyway).

When I talk to the "choco-guys", I'm noticing that when they go over the "Take a Walk" option, it looks different than when I do the menu option at my chocobo chick.

Green text on the chick menu is: "Take a walk (short)". The description of which reads that I can take my chick for a short walk out in Gustaberg and that the chick shouldn't get too tired.

Green text from the Chocobo Guy in stables is: "Take a walk". No "(short)" there, and the chocobo guy goes on about how as my chocobo grows I can take it to more locations for walks. He then talks about the weather and how weather of places you walk your chick can help it develop a preference for certain kinds of weather.

          From what I know already:

          1. Using "Take a Walk (short)" on your chick several times results in you meeting the trainer randomly out in the zone. On the third such meeting, you get your first story.

          2. Other people walking their chocobos in Saruta Baruta and Ronfaure have managed to recieve stories from the trainer of that stable.

          3. There are several stories from trainers in locations we can't start chocobo raising in at all, like Brutus in Jeuno and the Stable Master in Al Zabbi.

This leads me to believe that by taking my chocobo for a walk later on will allow me to randomly encounter these trainers and pick up their stories in the same manner.

Also, ~SUPPOSEDLY~, the "story of a worrisome chocobo" I got from Zopago walking my chick in Gustaberg will give a random chance of having the chick learn the digging/burrowing skill. (I predict a lot of searching to find that thread where I originally found this conjecture). Which means the other stories should give random chances to learn additional abilities.

Sounds reasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly what happened.

            Here's my little theory too:

Hantileon (or however you spell it) in San d'Oria gave me the "Story of an Impatient Chocobo" , which, if I were guessing, would lead to one or more of the "Dash" type abilities.

Since the Scout Chocobos (the Red ones) come from San d'Oria, that would make sense.

              Re: Chocobos and your Allegiance

If you want all 3 stories from the different trainers, you don't have to raise a whole chocobo, you could just buy the egg, raise far enough to get the story, then move onto the next story. I was thinking of doing that after my first one. It's just so much more convenient for me raising the chocobo in my home nation. It should only take about 7 days or so to get a story, maybe 10 at most.

                  Re: Chocobos and your Allegiance

So it seems like it'll be under the "Care for your chocobo" option, and only later on, when it matures more.

                  Taken from: http://www.playonline.com/pcd/update...B1/detail.html

*Care types will be added as the chocobo matures.
*The care type “Compete against others” will only be added after certain conditions are met.

                  Type of CareEffect
                  Watch over the chocobo
Strengthens bonds of affection. Places very little stress on the chocobo.

                  Tell a story
Strengthens bonds of affection and trains mental faculties. Telling various stories may have a beneficial effect for the chocobo.

                  Scold the chocobo
Disciplines the chocobo. Slightly weakens bonds of affection.

                  Compete against others
Strengthens bonds of affection, but depletes stamina. Entertains a bored chocobo.

                  Go on a walk
Strengthens bonds of affection, but depletes stamina. The chocobo may meet someone on its travels!

My suspicion in this matter is that we get the options for telling stories and choosing zones to walk our chocobos in when they advance to the Teen or Adult stages of their development. If you talk to the choco guy in the stables long enough, he'll start explaining how to use care options that none of us have access to yet. Given how weak and defenseless our chicks are at the present time, it would kind of make sense that they can't go further than the nearest zone to the stables or around town for a walk yet. I'm also guessing that they haven't developed enough to understand us talking yet either, which would sort of rule out telling them a story and having it produce any kind of effect.

I'm willing to bet that we can collect stories and use food to establish personalities in the Chick stage, but we won't see much of an effect from these for a while. Remember this is about a 30 day raising period to get your chick to the point where you can ride it. The furthest most of us are at the present time is day 17 or 18, so we should start seeing people getting to the Teen stage within the next week, IMO.

                      Updataru!

Ok, day 19 now, and despite my disappointment that my chocobo seems to be destined for yellowness, I've gone and tested out the Take a Walk (regular) option a few times.

First time, as everyone else seems to have experienced, I met the three trainers who challenged me to a race and got the "Compete against others" option added to the menu. However, today upon taking a walk, my chocobo ran into Hantalion from San D'Oria in Konshtat Highlands and made friends. If this goes the same way that the "Take a walk (short)" option did, I should gain Hantalion's story in another 2 meetings. Incidentally, my bird also made friends with "Air". I guess there's no accounting for taste.
