You can't join the guild until you get a few levels, but here's a great guide for leveling:

Honestly though, I wouldn't worry about leveling smithing until you have a higher level and a decent way of making gil. Smithing is one of the more expensive crafts, and if you don't have a way of making gil / farming materials, you're not gonna get that far. : ( -

Actually if you mine in Zeruhn you will get all of your starting ores from there. Just sell off what you don't use and you'll be able to get yourself up to the iron stage pretty cheaply.

Not correct. You can join the guild without any skill. You will still keep the same rank (amateur) until you complete the first guild test (available at 8 skill). The guild is on the lower level of the Metalworks, take the door right of the huge kiln.Kumei, pickpocket of Midgardsormr(Bastok Rank 10)
