Well, there is 8 levels of difference between you and the synth. Do you have support at the guild? That might help a little bit. If not, you might want to skill up a bit more by making something like Bronze Scales or something out of Bronze Sheets. That will get you a few more points of skill, and then you can attempt the Bolt Heads again.

That's why it's best to figure out the craft as you go instead of using a guide. Personally, I like to do things in 2-3 level increments, using NPC buyable items as much as possible. It saves me gil, boredom, and broken synths, plus it keeps me from having to live at the guild for image support.

I'm not saying that you can't do that synth at level 6, but just that you're going to break a lot (especially without support) until you get a few more levels.

Bronze Bolt Heads are a level 14 Synth, not 10. So that's a difference of 8 rather than 4 levels. I can totally see a 4 level stretch being worthwhile, but not 8.

Yeah, it's not so much the crystal type or direction, rather the synth is Incredibly Tough for your level so to speak. You should start synthing them fairly reliably with the advanced imaging support (the one you pay for) or when you are around lvl 9-10 smithing. Synthing bronze ingots into weapons or armour from bronze sheets should get you there, and seem to sell well on the AH.

You might want to check out http://ffxi.somepage.com for a list of every item in the game and where you can get it. It will save you a lot of time and trouble.

You can also find a listing of the synths for every craft, which can help you to find bridge synths to make it easier to get through difficult levels.^^

My advice: Multitask! Considering this is a game with a lot of content and many facets, I would suggest farming if the guild is closed (Ronfaure anyone?), or leveling. When you happen to see that the guild is open, see if they have any materials that will help you get to your next crafting goal. I'm lvl'ing cooking, and I only wait around for the guild to open if it's within 1 game hour. Otherwise, I run to the auction house, go fishing, farm, etc. until the guild will be open. Multitasking will save you hours of frustration.

Also, if this helps, when it says from level 6 to 10 it means your Blacksmithing Level and not your Job Level. I've met someone who was a new Blacksmith get confused with the same thing so. Hope that helps just a little.
