  • Item type synthed affect skillup?

I just wanted to throw a theory around. Do you think that true synthesis (making items from raw materials) yields better skillup than upgrade synthesis? (bone patas > hydro patas in this case)

    Here's the situation:

Awhile back I was synthing silver bangles to skill up goldsmithing. My skill was at 42 +adv. support, and silver bangles trivials at 49. I synthed on firesday, using a fire crystal, 10% waxing moon phase. The results were phenomenal.

Skill difference from trivial: 7 to 4
    Synths: 38
    Failures: 2 (5.26%)
    Skill Gained: 3.2 (84.21%) where .1 per synth = 100%

    Skill Rate @ 42 skill: 11/12 (91.7%) gained a level with a .2 skillup
    Skill Rate @ 43 skill: 9/14 (64.3%)
    Skill Rate @ 44 skill: 10/9 (111.11%)
    Skill Rate @ 45 skill: 2/3 (66.66%)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right now, I'm synthing Hydro Patas - trivial 68. I'm at 61 skill + GS specs and adv. support, exact same conditions as before (firesday w/ fire crystal, 10% waxing)

    Skill Difference from trivial: 7-6
First I synthed with GS Specs and adv. support:
    Synths: 12
    Failures: 2 (16.67%)
    Skill gained: 0.1 (8.33%)

Then I thought, maybe I should take off my specs:
    Synths: 15
    Failures: 5 (33.33%)
    Skill gained: 0.4 (26.66%)

Then I thought, maybe I should try without support, but that resulted in me failing and losing material 4 times in a row, at which point I gave up.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

I probably included alot of useless details in regards to my point, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible in case someone might be able to point something out that I hadn't thought of.

Maybe type of synthesis has to do with it? Or maybe things just get inherently harder at 60+ skill?

I believe it does, and in my informal chats with other leather crafters, they believe it does too. For example, Coeurl Gorget, lv.79 rarely give skillups, while Manticore Leather, lv.80 is a fountain of skill, and Tiger Jerkins, lv.79 yield satisfactory results... Overall, in tanning, I find that making leather always yields better skill than the same-level equivalents. Anything that uses an Ice crystal in tanning seems to lead to pretty mediocre results.

This is most definitely true. I notice wide variance in skillup chance depending on the reipe used (in Woodworking for instance, making ammunition like bolts and arrows seemed to provide very good skillups, while for Cooking, I've never seen such amazing skillups as when I was making sushi...

So many factors go into skill ups its sick. Item synthed, direction faced, day, moon phase, ect. I'm willing to bet there are even some that we don't know about and probably never will.
