  • Stupid Newb Questions

As I was sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing but waiting for LB1 today (got LB1 done ), I began to think that maybe I should start a craft. As I was looking at different crafts and different synths, I came across what I think is a pretty good plan to get myself in the cool popular rich crowd.

    (Elemental) Staff
    Woodworking (75) (Max: 1)
    Crystal x 1
    Ebony Lumber x1
    (Elemental) Bead x1

    (Elemental) Bead
    Goldsmithing (87)
    Yield: 1
    Crystal x 1
    (Elemental) Ore x1

So the big plan is to level both of these crafts (yes I realize it's going to be a lot of work) and synth beads which I will then synth into staves. Here's where the questions start...

    - I read on another post here that you can only be 40 levels over 60 in all combined crafts. 87 Goldsmithing and 75 Woodworking is 42 over. Could you synth these items at 86 and 74? If you could would it be a huge risk for a failed synth? Would 87 and 73 or 85 and 75 be better?

    - If I decided to not do Goldsmithing and instead focus on Woodworking, what do you think the odds are of an HQ staff synth at level 100?

Uhh, I think that's it. Oh yeah, I'm working on Alchemy right now so I can make some synths that require Alchemy and WW/GS, and also so I can get a feel for crafting.

Thanks for your answer, tips and flames.

Yes. 40 points total above 60 (but Fishing doesn't count, see my sig).

Splitting crafts is not a good idea, IMHO. If you're dedicated to being able to make your own HQ elemental staves, the level goldsmithing on one character and woodworking on another for best results (bear in mind that goldsmithing is excruciatingly expensive). Woodworking isn't really "cheap" either, but it's not nearly as bad.

From what I gather, HQ elemental staves aren't terribly rare once you're at 100+ Woodworking. I don't plan to attempt one for quite some time yet.

Still, it sounds like you have a very, very long road ahead of you. Don't get too caught up in the high level synths - find a craft you like and stick with it. Every craft makes money at high levels, but they're all different in feel and technique.
