  • Weird fishing happenings...

I'm a 27 fisherman and I'm liking it so far, its a low stress way to farm for me. But recently i've been having trouble. About a week ago I went out to la thiene to skill up with my frog lure / comp rod. But when i fished i got like 10 didn't catches in a row. What's worth was that my line kept reeling in like 4 or 5 seconds after I cast, almost like I didnt have time to reel in. I decided to leave after that.

So I was running through windhurst doing fame and saw tons of fishermen on the bridges and decided to give it a try. I was surprised (being in a city post patch) that I caught a stack of moat carp in about 30 min. And then nothing.... In the next hour or so I caught 3 more fish, thats all. After 15 or 20 min of not catching anything I zoned, still had a problem, zoned again, moved areas, still nothing. And once again it wasnt that I was just losing my catches, i wasn't getting bites period.

And now I come to tonight. My friend told me to try out nebs on the boat, so right now i'm on the boat. First boat trip I got 3 bites total, 2 being monsters, 1 i caught a neb. And the cycle has restarted where I just dont get any bites at all. I've heard that moon effects your bite rate,a nd believe it, but it doesnt effect it that much, there are other people around me still catching tons of fish. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

--edit: used crayfish paste and comp rod on the boat.

Since S-E started "dealing" with the botters, fishing is basically just a huge waste of time.... that is unless you ~like~ how its like real life with your cath rate

Whats up with all this "fishing is a waste of time post patch" business? I have plenty of friends who still rack in 25k an hour, more if the moon is good! Quit spreading false information..

Hi Ice! How have you been? I'll try and help ya out.

#1 Not sure why you were reeling in unintentionally. The only way to cancel your cast is to hit escape or enter. Maybe you had a book or something on your keyboard?? lol

#2 Fishing in the city has always been streaky plus there are rumors that with the 'crackdown' on bots, 'safe' fishing has been nerfed forcing real fishers out into the wilds of Vanadiel.

#3 Nebs are a hard catch on the Ferry. The best time is during the good Moon phases. You had the right bait but try using a carbon rod next time. You won't get the 'too small' messages. It may break but the occurrence is rare. Oh and btw. Fish on the stairs to avoid wasting your time. Theres a reason you see us all lined up on the stairs = No Mobs

Good Luck and if you want some skill advice, hit the cliffs in Gusta or Sarutaruba (sp?) with sliced sardine and your comp rod. Decent gil and fast (well, as fast as it can be for fishing) leveling into your 30's.

At 63 Fishing I make ~20-26k on Ferry. Thats constant gil sold immediately to NPC.

        Hope to pt again sometime!

Funny someone would say fishing is 'pointless' at the mighty skill of 14. You must know.

Ironic you would point that out... theres a reason I'm still level 14, and its not because I'm lazy. I've spent too many hours to count on the banks of the cheval river, with 3 lousy skill points to show for it. It's not that I havent made an effort.

Maybe saying fishing is a waste of time is an exaggeration, but for a low level fisher, its not very profitable, and dont even bother doing it in a city.

By the way, I said waste of time, not pointless. Theres a difference. Dont put quotations around something that wasnt said.

Any craft at start is a waste of time, if everything is a waste of time, then buying gil is our only option? You can't learn muliply/divide til you learnt add/minus, no? Step-by-step, don't rush it, the lu shang fishers(Not the lifeless bots) spent their newbie fisherhood like anyone else.
Fishing is actually one of those craftskill that becomes profitable earlier on, you simply use stacks of insect balls in places like Rabao, where only moat carp eats insect balls.. plus moat carps only require fishing 11, so it's almost 85% catchrate for some 4k/1d(?) fish...

My fishing is only 21, been mining these days, so haven't leveled it much.. but when I did fish, it was fun, only took me 2 days fishing at the river with my friend to get to 18 from 13 ^^ (yes I can give up leveling easily, I don't need 75 to enjoy my life) However I have to admit, I never had the 'zoning' problem, I was too lazy to zone, as my friend too, we only zone to the AH when we runs out of baits... but we have no 'fishing results get worse overtime' problem It's all luck.

Fishing is hardly pointless, nor profitless.

With level 80 fishing, I combine my alchemy skill with fishing to make 30K+ per hour.

It's true that fishing doesn't make a much money at low levels - but that's true of every craft. It's also true that fishing doesn't make as much at high levels than other crafts - but the plus side is it's much less stressful. No worrying about market forces, no worrying about material availability.

Also, unlike every other craft, you make money while skilling up, and the higher you go, the more money you make. Every other craft is the opposite - you lose money while skilling up and make money on the stuff you've already gained enough skill for.

                Just go out and fish.

If you like it, the money will eventually come (level 55+ with Lu Shang's is the common wisdom turning point for fishing).

I think theyre refering to catching Nebs and synthing them into Black ink (for Shihei)

In regards to the need to zone every hour or w/e, I dont think just zoneing works, I think its more in depth than that. I fish for moat carps while I play planetside of xbox, and after a few hours I constantly get this fast real in / you didnt catch anything. I dont catch rusties like some people say, I just don't catch for like 30 straight casts (atleast I dont lose bait). I've tried logging out for 30min-60min. I've tried zoning to moogle, zone to diff zone, moogle and zone, fishing in diff zone, and nothing seems to fix it. I think it might just be the game forcing you to do something else for a while (if so thats horribley unfair, you don't make smiths stop synthing why should you stop fisherman).

I would like to retract at least part of my statement regarding the lack of skillups to show for your efforts. Last night I didn't feel like doing much so I grabbed my Composite rod, fly lure, and fishing gear from my mule and parked it in the stream by the East Ronfaure entrance to San d'Oria. I probably fished for 2-2.5 hours, caught maybe 2.5 stacks of cheval salmon, and 1.5-2 stacks of shining trout, but I got TONS of skillups. I think I got from 14.5 -16.1 in that time which is incredibly impressive. Once I got to 16 I stopped getting skillups altogether though. I did manage one skillup when I caught a shining trout (they cap higher than salmon, correct?) but all of my lost catches and salmon catches resulted in no skillups for the following hour, even after double zoning and logging out/in. Does Cheval Salmon cap at 16? I thought I read it was 18 or 19...

                            Anyone? (icemage? )

PS. I actually like fishing again. Maybe S-E "tweaked" it a little so you didnt have to spend 6-8 hours to get a measly skillup. Theres relaxing, then theres cruel. Also, this was during New moon, so I think I might set aside new moons for fishing more often.

Cheval Salmon cap at 21. Shining Trout cap at 37.

You can realistically stay at East Ronfaure until 19 or 20 pretty safely. At your level, I'd actually recommend Jugner Forest (river) if you're fishing for Salmon/Trout. The bite rate tends to be a bit better there.
