  • Fishing guide Lv. 1-100?

    I have searched the forums for a sturdy fishing guide but have yet to found one. I would like to level up my fishing so I can be more like my BEST FRIEND KUNO! Im currently Lv. 8. She has told me that I should do the following to start but I want a complete guide to print off. Also, should I really try and get Lu Shang's? Is it worth the loss I make off of Moat Carp, about 4k a stack, or trade them to the guy for 1.2k a stack and EVENTUALLY get Lu Shangs? So Lu Shangs or not and a guide Lv. 1 - 100. Yes, I am aware that I am a pain in the arse, just humor me please.

    Lv.0-10
    Rod: Composite Rod
    Bait: Little Worms
    Area: Windurst Walls, Woods or Waters

    Lv.10-11

    The rest I have no idea, Kuno gave me all ths info so credits to her. I would give her a hug for all her help cause she helps ALOT but she would most likely decapitate me. Love ya, Kuno

    I suggest getting to know the three fishing sites listed on the MysteryTour website. They are a wealth of knowledge, and honestly... fishing is best when you follow your own path.

    Fishing3 on that site (Marissa's) has a nice message board with a couple of FAQs that can point you in the proper direction, should you get lost.

    The Lu Shang rod is not needed, I have seen quite a few fisherman get to skill 90+ with just composites and mithrans alone. However, getting a Lu shall allow you to reel in higher level fish more consistently than without one. Also, as far as I know, that keyitem that you're given completing the quest does not affect your fishing abilities, so if you've got the gil go buy one

      Gaki's Fishing Guide v2.2
      -----------------------------------------

      Contents:

      I - preface
      II - Places to skill up and (towards the end) places i am guessing from others offer good skillups
      III - Lu Shang Rod
      IV - Zaldon
      V - Anti-fisherman Code
      VI - Misc.
      VII - Thanks

      I - PREFACE

      This guide outlines all of the areas that i skilled up at, it is merely a suggestion- the best path for every fisherman is to experiment with all the different areas.
      Rank up fish will be marked with ***.

      II - PLACES TO SKILL UP

      ==============
      1-9 Port Windurst
      ==============
      Rod/Bait: Bamboo + Lugworms, or Composite + Sabiki Rig (do not use sabiki with bamboo!)
      Target Fish: Bastore Sardines, Quus
      Notes: Make sure to talk to Naanja-Paanja and get advanced synthesis and to have all the fishing gear

      ==========================
      9-11 Fresh Water areas in windurst
      ==========================
      Rod/Bait: Composite Rod + Insect Ball Paste
      Target Fish: ***Moat Carp(8), Gold Carp
      Notes: if you intend to take fishing all the way it is best to hand in the moat carp you do catch to the Lu Shang quest NPC

      ===============
      11-20 East Ronfaure
      ===============
      Rod/Bait: Composite Rod + Fly Lures
      Target Fish: ***Chavel Salmon(18), Shining Trout
      Notes: you can get line snaps and lose your lure but the lures are cheap so no worries

      ==================
      20-30 La Theine Plateau
      ==================
      Rod/Bait: Composite Rod + Frog Lure
      Target Fish: Dark Bass, ***Giant Catfish(28), Red Terrapin
      Notes: both Dark Bass and Catfish can be traded to Zaldon, you CAN catch monsters here (minimum lvl would be 25 melee, 30 mage)

      =================
      30-40 South Gustaberg
      =================
      Rod/Bait: Composite Rod + Sliced Sardines
      Target Fish: Ogre Eel, Zalfmung Bass, Gold Lobster, Bastore Bream, Bladefish
      Notes: if you have the time you can fish up your own sardines and farm the wind crystals to make your own bait. Breams and Blades will be rare catches. Cobalt Jellyfish can also be pulled up.

      ***Gugru Tuna(38) : cuaght on ferry with peeled lobster- WARNING BREAKS ALL RODS!

      ===================
      40-50 Buburimu Peninsula
      ===================
      Rod/Bait: Mithran Rod + Rogue Rig
      Target Fish: Shall Shells
      Notes: monsters can be caught and Bogys spawn on the beaches as well lvl 40+ melee recomended

      ***Monke-Onke(48) : Composite Rod + Little Worm caught at East Sarutabaruta (Lake), Giddeous, Yhoator Jungle

      ==========
      40-50 Rabao
      ==========
      Rod/Bait: Carbon Rod + Insect Ball Paste
      Target Fish: Sandfish, Moat Carp for Lu Shang
      Notes: perfect for building up moat carps for the lu shang

      *From this point on (unless otherwise noted) this guide will be written for those who have the Lu shang rod and woodworking highenough to repair it. However being that i dont even have that at the moment i have been finding other ways to skill up and i will list those too, but i do not plan on skilling up like this after 60, in other words in this i guide i shall mark where i got my skillups from 55-60-- they will be marked with ##

      ==========
      50-55 Ferry
      ==========
      Rod/Bait: Lu Shang + Sliced Sardine
      Target Fish: Bluetail, Noble Lady, Gugru Tuna (these fish wont give you skillup)
      Notes: hmm not much to say really, expect breaks everynow and then-- if you want to avoid the tunas, just look for large sweat beads. Nobles and Blues are both small.

      ==========
      ##55-?? Ferry
      ==========
      Rod/Bait: Lu Shang + Sliced Bluetail
      Target Fish: Silver Shark, ***Bhefel Marlin(58)
      Notes: so far this combo is working for me well. I simply watch the sweat beads and avoid the large ones.

      =================
      ##55-60 South Gustaberg
      =================
      Rod/Bait: Lu Shang + Sinking Minnow Lure
      Target Fish: Ogre Eel, Zalfmung Bass, Gold Lobster, Bastore Bream(they actually cap at 86 but i doubt anyone would fish them all the way to 86)
      Notes: Only the breams offer skillups, so dont expect a steady skillup rate, the reason i am gettin skillups here is because this is where im fishing for gil to fund woodworking. With the recent update it seems that the catch rate for this area has been increased, now whethor or not that is because it wasnt loaded with bots anymore or simply they programmed it to be like that because they added mobs--well no one can know for sure T_T but it works for me.

      *From this point onward is an educated guess i am making as to where to skillup-- any feedback from higher skilled fishers (80+ please ^^) would be much apreciated.

      ==========
      60-100 Ferry
      ==========
      Rod/Bait: Lu Shang + Meatballs
      Target Fish: Silver Shark, Titanicus, Ryugu Titan, Sea Zombie
      Notes: woodworking 73+ is a must, although ive heard of people using composite rods with 85 alchemy to repair so.... ya.... that could work i spose...

      III - LU SHANG ROD

      In order to obtain the lu shang rod one most hand in 10000 moat carps to one of two NPCS in port sandoria (the two npcs fishing on the pier)
      Rod Info: repairable with woodworking lvl 73+ using a light crystal.
      WARNING: it is possible to lose the rod during synthesis if you are hit by an enemy or AOE, if someone casts a spell on you, if you zone during repair (ferry), and if you get disconnected!!!!!

      IV - ZALDON

      Zaldon is good for getting fame, and at higher levels of fishing for getting titles and possibility of rare items. Here is a list of fish that he will accept and what he gives you. He is located in Selbina. This information was obtained via http://www.lisaarndt.com/

      KEY: fish - gil - item - title
      Giant Catfish - 130g - Earth Wand
      Dark Bass - 130g - green rock
      Ogre Eel - 130g - Turquoise Ring - Title: Cordon Bleu Fisher
      Zafmlug Bass - 200g - Blue Rock
      Silver Shark - 800g - Trident - Title: Ace Angler
      Emperor Fish - 1400g - Cuir Highboots
      Titanicus - 2000g - Ancient Sword - Title: Lu Shang-like Fisher King
      Ryugu Titan - 2500g - item unknown??
      How to unlock Zaldon:
      In order for Zaldon to recognize you as a fisher you have to complete four quests. The first quest, and the hardest, is the Sand Charm quest- kill pirates on the ferry to get a sand charm. Then you have to complete the three oswald(selbina) quests.

      V - ANTI-BOT CODE

      The anti-bot code is a script the SE put into the game to prevent people from using third party applications to fish (bot) while they are not at the computer. In order to prevent yourself from experiencing the effects of this script you must zone out of the area you are fishing at about every 30-45 minutes. You will know that you are experiencing the code if you suddenly get an abnormal amount of 'you didnt catch anything' and lots of items cuaght. Now some people think that this isnt true, but from my experience in rabao i vouch for it being true.

      VI - MISC

      Sweat Bead Trick ***Updated: Ok, since the update (just before COP release) it is no longer possible to fully utilize this trick. However it can still be done, it just isnt as good as it used to be. Basically you look in first person view and from the size of the water beads you can tell if you have a small, medium, or large (rod breaking fish or monster) and from this you can determine whethor or not you want to hit enter to pull it up, if you dont want to risk breaking rod or having to fight a mob simply let the timer run (believe its like 5 or 7 seconds) and you will lose the catch.

      Sneak Fishing: If you are a mage that can cast sneak on yourself you have the advantage of being able to 'sneak fish'. Basically, all monsters that you pull while fishing aggro only to sound. So if you keep yourself snuck, when you pull up a monster it wont aggro you!!! it will just wonder off aimlessly.

      VIII - THANKS

      I would like to thank the following for all the help they have provided. Vycan, Taraye, Jagang, Sabante, Tullyamo, Marissa- for her forums and information and oddness ^_^

          Forest carp are now accepted for the quests "The Rivalry" and "The Competition."

          The reward for a single moat carp in the quests "The Rivalry" and "The Competition" has been changed to match the amount received when selling the fish to other NPCs.

          The rewards for the quest "Inside the Belly" have been adjusted.
          so moat carp give near no gil for the quest. you can also trade forest carps in which can make fishing for forest carps a nice way to lvl to 20 i think.

          also "Inside the Belly" i think thats the one with Zaldon right? so different items from that??

            Just about all fishing guides are obsolete now, but some general stuff still works.

            It's no longer feasable to try and catch fish that are too high above your level. Also many fish that were rare, are now more easily fishable, so it's possible to skillup on many types instead of the old school path of only a few specific fish.

            The best way to do that is to find a lure/bait that will only catch the fish you are looking for.

            Spend some time on research here:
            http://www.clanwind.com/ffxi/fishing/
            Just take note that the prices are no longer valid. It's best to see what is selling often at a decent price on the AH and then go out to catch that kind of fish.

            There are many bait/lures for sale at fishing guilds on the ferry, windhurst, and selbina. Otherwise, craft it or buy from AH. Expendable bait works better, but often catches more types of fish than you want.

            Best fishing is durring the phases when the moon is full, or "new" e.g. no moon out, or very slim crescent. 50% is the worst time for fishing and is often too frustrating to try with the lack of bites.

            If you get too many "you did not catch anything" messages, rezone to recover from being tired out--this is known as the bot code. Re-logging doesn't work.

            Tire out fish as much as possible, if you don't, you will almost always get a line snap (baibai 7k shrimp lure), or worse, a broken rod. If you seek a large foutain of sweat drops pouring out quickly like fireworks, youre definetly in danger of breaking your rod if you don't tire out the fish--if it fights hard, you will likely end up with a line snap even if you tire it out so just hit esc to cancel the fight if it seems too tough. Learning this is a must if you fish on the ferry, since a lot of high level big fish bite. Thankfully there is a guild shop on the boat selling many types of bait and lures--just bring extra rods if you're inexperienced.

            That should be enough to get you to lvl 60 easily.

            As for lushang, it's a great rod, but not as necessary as before. The main benefit of lu, is that it can catch any size of fish without the too small or too large cancelations that other rods have. It's also quite tough and doesn't break often. Also lu is the only rod that is easily capable of catching legendary fish (I'm not sure what that is useful for just yet). The drawback is that the rod does not tire out out fish as quickly as other wooden rods, so it can be hard to catch some of the fish that put up a fight if your skill level isn't high enough to help tire out the fish faster. So while it can catch every fish, it's not always as easy.

            Is it worth it? I'd have to say yes if you get to lvl 60 and are serious about fishing. I still manage to catch more fish with it than other rods (seems to have a small bonus to bite rate), with no fear of lost catches due to size. More than makes up for the slight extra difficulty of fish fighting you for a longer time. As a result I can make a sizeable amount more money with it in the long run. It's very convenient with it's one-size-fits-all, so I can run around the world and not have to worry if I have the correct rod as long as my skill is effective. Still, you need to have the skill to use it, so for a low level fisher, I probably woudn't bother. As it is at lvl 65, I switch between a mithran and my lu just to test how things go. Usually I prefer my lu, though I may change my mind when I try and fish silver sharks which are known to thrash around a lot.

            Seems like the cheaper wooden rods (small fish) and a mithran (some small, most large fish) are the best for skilling up, while the carbon (small fish) and composite (large fish) are durable rods that are good for catching money fish that are below your skill level. You will break wooden rods once in awhile, so pack a few if you can.

            That's all the advice I can offer for now.
