  • High level advice ... Crafting Alchemy vs Wood as support for fishing / ranger

Hello everybody. I only want to ask a simple question about what is better for me. The problem i have now is ... i cant decide between Wood or alchemy. Wood have some strong points and alchemy too. Remember, this question isnt about profit, I make my gil with Lu shang.

Which one of these options should I take?

    1) Level both 80 wood / 80 alchemy. Fishing 100
    Pros
Make ammo, make shiheis cheap. Repair Lu shang.
    Cons
Wont be able to make HQ expensive stuff from +80 alchemy.

    2) Level Alchemy to 100, Fishing 100, wood 60.
    Pros
Make bullets, make less shiheis, make HQ stuff from +80 alchemy.
    cons
wont be able to repair lu shang, my main income

I am going to be a Ranger later ... that's why I ask

    Thanks in advance

I think most serious fisherman pretty much need the skill to repair lu'shangs.

You can repair lu'shangs at like lvl 71-72, just takes alot of crystals, so its not exactly economical (although light crystals have crashed now due to padded cap nerf).

I'd just go to 80 wood I suppose. the $ you can make off fishing at high level should supply you w/ all the stuff you need.

Hmm I would take Alchemy to 85 and wood to 75.

      - You're still able to fix your rod, provided you need a few more attempts (crystal is cheap anyways).
      - Better chance of HQ on bullets and silver bullets.
      - I think a strong factor to consider is how often silver bullets are sold on your server's AH. If they aren't sold that often, more reason to take Alchemy a tad higher.
      - Shihei is relatively cheap compared to bullets anyways, so I usually just buy that from AH.

the problem w/ alchemy 85, wood 75, is that lushang cap is 80.

So every time you repair it, won't you have a chance of gaining skill in woodworking? Which in turn will lower alchemy by said amount?

And from what I've heard when fishing for legendary fishes, you break the lu'shangs ALOT.

I would think it wouldn't be long til you end up 80 and 80, in which case gettin to 85 would be a waste in 5 points of work.

Ahh true, I didn't know about the 80 trivial skill on repairing Lu Shang's.

Do one or the other, not both.

            - Repairing Lu Shang's is NOT essential. Having the rod is very useful from level 50-96, since many of the fish you want will line snap or outright break the other rods, but there are only a handful of places where a Lu Shang's F. Rod can break. If you steer clear of these places (Selbina-Mhaura Ferry, Quicksand Caves, Boyahda Tree, Kuftal Tunnel, Den of Rancor), you shouldn't ever need to fix your Lu Shang's.

            - With the above in mind, having the Lu Shang's is very nice. You make way more money than with any other rod. Catch rate improves, and you'll never get a "Whatever caught the hook was too small to fish with this rod." message.

Most hard-core fishermen pick woodworking, but I do know a small minority who choose Alchemy instead.

Attempting to "split the difference" by getting 80/80 or some variant thereof is just asking for pain as your skills will yo-yo between the two crafts forever with no appreciable result.

Thanks a lot of all your answers. I really thank you.

I will continue with alchemy to 100. I will do what Icemage said, just avoid the places where Lu shang break. The only problem i have is ... Alchemy is getting really expensive .. . eat the cost
