some guides say for 0-11 fish for moat carps..

    some say crayfish...

    some say bastore sardines...

    No matter what i fish..

    no matter the date/time/moonphase...

    there's no skill ups.

    /stabself.

i fished carps for like 4 hours with a skill up of .3 total.... currently skill 4.

then I did sardines.... 3 hours with skill up of .1 total.

Crayfish.... no skill up for 3 hours.

Full fishing gear, no image support for crayfish but else i get adv image support from sleepy taru in port.

Is this normal?

It has been months since I was below level 5 skill, but I am pretty sure its general belief the first 2-3 level are real hard to get. Not entirely sure as of why, but the time it will take you to get to level 3 will later raise you to 8-10.

IMO, little worms are your best bait at low level since it targets crayfish and moats. Also, remember to zone every hour.

Oh yes, one more thing. Remember fishing is all about patience. Unlike other crafts where you can just throw gil at them to get good gains, for fishing you actually cant power level it at all.

Except for specific situations .4 in 4 hours isn't bad.

Anyone who fishes knows you don't expect skill ups, but just comes eventually.

The easiest way to gain skill ups in fishing is high fishing area with good bite rate.

      This combination is quite hard.

Places where I've encounters this is the boat, SSG, and a handful of other places.

None of which you'll see in a long time I bet.

from 1-5, rabao for carps I guess is good. Kazham till 18 I like, but except for certain levels, it's personal preference.

You really can't go wrong with the ferry boat, for skill ups except massive amounts of money lost from broken rods and possible deaths.

I have seen poweryoga running around in full rng af, doubt she has much to worry about on the boat
from 1-10 port windy was great, but since a great deal of ppl trained mobs to kill most of the bots they have moved into porty windy and it's full of lag
I'm sure you can spare about 20k, go for comp or mirthan rod, about 4 or 5 stacks of insect paste and a few stacks of worms you can fish in Z mines on the bridge, port sandy or windy woods at the foutain, I listed those ate the first lvls are long and boring and they are filled with ppl who talk, something to get rid of your boredom
6 stacks and I zone, to me its better then to time myself

          well... sea horror aggros up till god knows what lvl so i still worry about it on the boat... not to mention if it catches you... death. >>;

but yah... I've been doing moat carps in sandy right now, up to lvl 7 and its pretty good rate of skilling...

          Am I the only one who gets excited when i pull up a tricolored carp instead of moat? >>;;

Good to see you are past the sticky first few levels.
To be honest I got 'excited' too when I got other fish like tricarps or gold carps instead of a regular carp. That changed once I was doing Lushang quest.

Fishing is by far the slowest craft. Nothing you can do about it, not many ways to accelerate it. On the plus side, it's relaxing and can be rather fun, especially fishing out in the wilds (I did some fishing in Dragon's Aery yesterday... what a rush! Nothing like fishing right next to a level 78+ Demonic Rose ready to eat you for breakfast if your Sneak drops)...

just hit lvl 13 today... (thank you full moon )

I'm wondering... does the type of rod you use affect bite rate/pull rate?

Like... if you use a carbon instead of composite, you will get more bites and more pulls but more chance of losing line/breaking rod/etc.

Not too sure about those... if its a stupid question tell me.

                  Some believe so, some don't.

The difference might be so minor it won't really help you.

A carbon in most places but rabao would have annoying. Rod breaks more or less. Live bait might not be so bad, but when you use lures it's just more annoyances.

You should not go after tricolor carps at 13. Though moat carps are nice. Quus or globes would be more better. Though skill ups are rare, you can end up fishing anything and skill up might look the same rate.

Congratulation on 13! ^^ Unless you're still going for moat carp to sell or trade in for Lu Shang's, i'd suggest fishing in East Ronfaure with a fly lure until about level 18. Target fish are Cheval Salmon (cap at 21) and Shining Trout (cap at 37). You can also catch tri carps and gold carps here but not with a fly lure, you'd need to go back to little worms or insect paste. During 2 full moon phases i got from lvl 12 to 21. Salmon and trout will break all rods except for composite and Lu's of course. They sell for very little so unless you're under the belief that a caught fish gives more skill ups than just a bite, go with a composite.

Yup, I've been yanking up salmons and trouts in ronfaure with composite.

Skill up is fairly decent... got a level in 2 hours with full moon. (not sure if its suppose to be faster)

But it seems to be going up a bit faster now. Its also kind of amusing to see the magicked bones chase people around at night.

I lvl'ed from 13-20 in about a day in east ronfuare it was the fastest lvl'ing for me so far, the worst was 22-28, catfish gave me hardly any skill, I was getting about 30 and running to sell to a npc dozen of times, so I just fished off the brdige in North gusta till 27 off tri's.

The rod you use does not affect bite rate, though it can affect your catch rate. Large poles like composite will sometimes get a "too small" message if you fish for small fish, small poles will break or snap their lines if you fish for large items.

Lu Shang's Fishing Rod is a special case, and it will let you pull in fish with much greater regularity, though it still won't help you if nothing is biting the hook.
