I find past 15 with a comp rod I catch a lot of rusty leggings and subligars, from 0-15 once in a great while, now past 30 I can catch about 4 or 5 subligars every few hours off the coast near windy, so far I have gotten rusty items in bascially everyplaced I fish, they dont really show up till past a hour of fishing, then I seem to catch a few in row
you dont wanna catch them without comp-mirthan-lu shangs rod really, I think I broke a few glass fiber poles off these items

I just started fishing, and I caught 2 rusty caps and 1 rusty bucket at level 0 in La Theine with a Carbon Rod.

          haha awesome,my plan is:
          My Smith (lv 45)
Fish for Rusty Caps (comp rod, sabiki rig)
Light Crystal + Rusty Cap (other items..)
          =Padded Cap
They sell for 3,000 gil to a NPC. If I can catch 70 in 4-6 hours
          70 x 3,000 = 210,000 gil
          Imagine doing this even longer
I havent tried selling HQ Capds & such or Padded boots, subligars, swords etc.) Im sure the possibilities are endless..and this has nothing to do with the "economy" either...unless you buy them which is quiet pointless.

ITs not quite that much. First of all they dont sell for 3,00gil, even with heroe fame i can only sell them for about 2.6k in jeuno, bastok. Secondly, it takes an hour or more for the "Rusty" items to appear when u start fishing(anti bot thing takes a bit to kick in). Thirdly, each cap you will need to invest a light crystal(about 600gil each on fairy). So these factors cut into your profits. HOWEVER, its still some good gil, and you have some chance at HQ'ing when making Padded caps(sometimes you get Strong caps)

I thought that the liklihood to catch rusted equipment decreases as your fishing level go up. The reason I thought this was because that quest in Bastok where you trade in the 5 rusty buckets for gil, the NPC says "I hope you don't get better at fishing anytime soon."

I have never caught rusty caps before, so good luck there (level 8 fishing if it even matters..).

                FYI:
The only location in Jeuno where the NPC price is affected by fame is the Mithra behind the Counter at the tenshoda ("Show me your wares"). That price, however, is based on Tenshoda fame, not Jeuno.

Don't you get something good for breaking down the Padded Caps with a lightning crystal?

                  - You can fish rusty items at level 0 if you want. However, your successful reel in rate is increased as you gain levels. The difference isn't that significant but it is noticeable. I probably get 50% less fewer "lost catches" than a level 0 fisherman would on rusty items at fishing level 50.

                  - In order to catch 70 rusty caps in 4-6 hours, you need a level 3 fishing moghancement (overwheming water energy). This can cost you either a lot of gil (I spent 220K on furniture) or a lot of mog house space (if you try to cheese out and use something like Water Jugs, expect to lose access to about 35 of your mog house slots to furniture).

                  - The synthing recipe for padded caps is level 34 smithing. You have to be at least level 24 to have any chance of success with advanced imagery, and even then you're at break-even or less. It doesn't get profitable until around level 30 smithing.

                  - Everyone and their brother seems to be wanting to do this lately, so light crystal prices are at a premium (they've gone from 6K to 9K per stack in a week on Midgardsormr).

                  - The lightning crystal + padded cap recipe yields iron ingots. I tested this and found it wasn't a worthwhile risk or investment in time for the monetary return.

Not really, with overwhelming water power fishing enhancement I've gotten a cap on my first cast several times. I even warp to my HP in Rabao every hour since that seems to help my rusty cap rate.
High skill also helps in catching caps with a rogue rig it seems. I constantly catch more caps than lower skill fishermen it seems.

As for numbers, you make 2650gil - (ah price of light cluster / 12) per cap. So 2340gil per cap on Ragnarok. Failing the restore at 38 skill seems VERY rare, so far at over 150 restores without a fail.

(Record so far for me is 23 caps in one hour, average is more like 15ish but that's pretty awesome imho.)
