Hey, this is what i did to get lvl 18. A great way in fact. Once your skill isn't gaining anymroe from your previous item u make (i forgot what it is) make a ......

no really, its not as exicting as i make it seem.
lol synthesis is 2x Bronze sheet + 1x ash lumber + fire crystal =
skill raising alot... when i started at lvl 16 doing this, i raised .1 or .2 EVERY time
depending on server, i'm on Rag, make a mule in San'doria to by the 12x ash lumber for roughly 3k (sells out at guild to quick, can't get it)
now, note, this will get u to lvl 18, very quickly, durning the 17's i remmeber i only didn't have .1 or .2 a few times.
after that... youur on the clean for making iron ignots without as much faliures... lil noobs in Bastok sell iron for 450 gill, so i make even a begger profit now.
note to: aspis is needed to gain next lvl in smithing, so keep one
sell at AH for like 600 gill, or be inpaitent and go to guild for 220
