After scouring for fishing guides.. I've yet to find out what fish are actually good for. I found a table, showing that Mithras could eat raw fish, however, there is usually a negative stat for every positive stat for the effect. So I figured... Fish must be vital ingredients for the cooking guild. Again, I only found a couple of recipes using Fish... so my simple question is -- Why do people BUY fish?

cooking
I'm a cook, and I use fish alot.
For example, fish mithkabob only calls for 4 different types of fishes. Later on there are other sushi type of food that calls for them, which are very popular with samurais.
Also I heard some fishes are used in making alchamy stuff, like poison powder ect.

I use pies.
Most everything at the AH sells for equal to/or less than what I get from a NPC. And Im not wasting tons of AH spots for barely a difference. ><Kuno's super cool stats!

Fishing is a great way to make money, you just need to know what to fish for. I have listed below all the fish you can fish up to skill level 40, ordered by skill cap (in parentheses).
- Cobalt Jellyfish(0) - caught anywhere but not reliably (hence the 0 skill cap), used in the only alchemy recipe to make Mercury. Sells for about 2.5K a stack on AH.
- Crayfish(7) - doesn't sell well, around 700 per stack on AH, but it usually sells fairly fast. Used to make crayfish balls, which are a very high demand bait.
- Bastore Sardine(7) - easy to catch in volume so not worth selling at AH, but is used in a lot of cooking recipes.
- Moat Carp(11) - sells for around 3.5k a stack and extremely quickly on AH. Used to make sliced carp (which nobody in their right mind would do) or for the Sandy quest to get Lu Shang's Rod.
- Greedie(14) - practically worthless for all I know. I don't know of any recipe that uses them. Only reason to fish for these is to find the rare Fat Greedie fish for a quest in Selbina or skillup.
- Copper Frog(16) - not sure of the worth of this since I have never caught one but it is used to make frog lures (alchemy) and blackened frog.
- Yellow Globes(17) - used for poison dust alchemy recipe. Sells for about 3k a stack on AH.
- Quus(19) - aside from the Bastok clock quest with Bubbly Bernie these don't have much selling value (although you can make 6k from a stack of quus doing this quest).
- Cheval Salmon(21) - pretty much worthless, and hard to sell on AH, used in a handful of cooking recipes very few use.
- Tri Colored Carp(27) - sells for around 1k a stack and very slowly on AH. Sliced carp is it as far as I know.
- Pipira(29) - sells for around 6k (I think) a stack on AH and somewhat quickly. Used to make roast pipira which is one of the best dex/attack foods in the game.
- Tiger Cod(29) - sells for around 1k on AH but not very quickly, some people use it to make sliced cod to level cooking, can be profitable selling sliced cod to fishing guild using cod you've caught.
- Nebimonite(30) - 10K+ a stack. Highly valuable and used in many recipes, notably the black ink alchemy recipe (needed for the high demand shihei recipe) and fish mithkabobs. Not easy to catch in volume.
- Giant Catfish(31) - since you can't stack it I wouldn't recommend selling on AH. Used for very high level cooking recipe, steamed catfish.
- Dark Bass(33) - sells for around 1k a stack and even slower than tri-colored carp. Used for very high level cooking recipe, bass meuniere.
- Ogre Eel(34) - I have no idea how valuable this fish is. Used in high level alchemy recipe, venom dust.
- Shining Trout(37) - sells for around 2k a stack on AH but is a slow mover, used to make trout balls that very few buy.
- Nosteau Herring(39) - sells for about 3k on AH but not quickly at all. Used to make pickled herring, which is profitable selling to the cooking guild, but few make it.
Fishing is time consuming but I've found it a great way to make some cash while waiting for a party invite. Moat carp is probably the best and fastest way to make money fishing, and I still do it when I want to make some quick cash.Rank: 5

Sorry Mr. Evil, but as far as I know, cobalt jellyfish can be fished up anywhere with any bait, much like rusty items except it consumes a piece of bait. I know of no way to isolate cobalt jellyfish.
I feel your pain too. My alchemy is at 12 and I can skillup off of mercury but the cost of one stack to make only 3 vials of mercury is 2500. I'd probably have to put 50k in it to even get up to 15 to reliably make poison potions with advanced image support. I caught only 2 stacks of jellyfish since I started fishing, some 3 months ago.Rank: 5

Cobalt Jellyfish are totally unnecessary except for a handful of recipes. Mercury can be obtained directly as a drop from Hecteyes and Magic Pots, if I recall, which makes synthing it using jellyfish a losing proposition for the most part. The only other recipe I know of that uses them that hasn't already been mentioned is for Goblin Chocolate.
You can only catch them in salt water, but it seems any bait will work - I've caught them using anything from Lugworms,Worm Lures and Sabiki Rig to esoteric bait like crayfish paste. Areas where I have confirmed catching them:
Port Windurst
East Sarutabaruta
West Sarutabaruta
Buburimu Peninsula
Mhaura
Battalia Downs
Lower Jeuno
Port Jeuno
Kazham
Norg
Sea Serpent Grotto
Icemage

Jellyfish
With moghancement fishing I caught over 3 stacks in under 90 mins using comp rod and rogue rig in batalia downs. Rogue rigs is expensive itself so it might not be an option for you but it is probably the best way to "isolate" the jellyfish.
