  • 100k in alchemy will get me how far?

I have 100k I've put aside to start getting into alchemy. I already have the lists of things to lvl on:

    0-6 Tsurara
    6-12 Poison Dust
    12-16 Mercury
    16-18 Poison Potion
    18-20 Echo Drops
    20-21 Glass Fiber
    21-24 Silent Oil
    24-30 Eye Drops
    30-31 Minnow
    31-34 Artificial Lens
    34-39 Potion

but my question is 100k even enough to get to level 40? Also any advice from high level alchemists is always appreciated.

Maybe if you don't resell anything you make. Somehow I doubt the validity of those claims.

Yeah, I really don't think that can be right.

Alchemy was very cheap to level 15. I probably spent less than 30k here, and even that's more than likely a HUGELY inflated number.

EDIT: Mercury and Poison Dust are bad mojo man. Seek alternatives. =p

Between 20 and 30 though, I did spend huge amounts of money. Safe to say this was 100k. I think my methods were rather inefficent though (to warn you, I more or less took the path you outlined in your post). I don't have any suggestions off the top of my head, but you'll want to look into checking the price and resell price of EVERYTHING you can craft for skillups. Keep in mind that if you intend to do this quickly you'll be selling to NPCs fairly often.

EDIT: This just occurred to me. ^^ You can get skillups by repairing Glass Fibre rods until level 29. That's Broken rod + Light Crystal. Since there's a surprisingly low number of broken glass rods at the AH usually, you might not want to do this exclusively (also, I remember the skillup rate was slowish), but it DOES make a profit on my server selling the repaired rods on my server. Also, a post on ffxi.allakhazam said that repaired GF rods sell for 1600 gil to the Fishing Guild in windurst. I haven't tried this, but it is correct, then (on my server) I could make minor profits or break even on this recipe, and bypass the AH entirely.

Some tips for after that point though: You'll want to make Potions and Vitriol for 30-41ish. If my item list is right, Potions stop giving skill at 40 and Vitriol stops at 43. I think I did Potions 30-35 and Vitriol 35-40.

At 40, Carbon Fiber is your best friend! It can be made at a profit (selling to the AH), and a stack sells in about a day in Jeuno. Shocking, no? This can take you to 45.

As I'm only at 44, I don't really know what happens next. Several threads on the ffxi.allakhazam.com boards agree that Holy Water is most excellent for 45-51, though. It /does/ look like a very cheap combine.

Some sites: http://mysterytour.web.infoseek.co.j.../us/index.html This is my favorite site for recipes. It's infinitely more comprehensive than most others I've seen in English, and unlike with Japanese sites translated through Babelfish, you don't have to make guesses as to what the heck X item actually is called ingame.

          http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.htm...7463789&num=19
EDIT: Er the second one turned out to be something else entirely. S what I get for naming Bookmarks vaguely and pretending I know what they are even when the links don't work, hehe.

These last are pretty good threads on alchemy. The boards appear to be down ATM though. x.x

Thanks Koren. I was worried for awhile there.

I've also been hunting bees of late so I managed to get a couple of stacks of beehive chips and that helped get me started. I found waterwasps drop beehive chips more then half the time and are easily killed so for those who actually need beeswax and would rather farm for it try Pashow.

              No problem. ^_^
I think the thing to remember is that you should try to level slowly and at a profit, with exceptions at a few points. If you try to power through certain rough spots, you very well may end up spending similarly to Xiphoid. x.x

Got to level 51 alchemy today. ^^ I'd like to confirm that yes, Holy Water is perfect for speed-leveling 45-51.

Not sure if you've passed his skill level, but starting at 14 you should do echo drops all the way to 19 or 20. I went from 14-19.5 on 20k worth of materials and once all my echo drops I'm looking at a 6-7k profit. I'm not sure about poison potions, but i think echo drops are much better. Now i just need some more gil to start mass producing silent oils

Cool guys txs for the extra input. Mostly I'm stockpiling components and making more money. I can't really start getting into Alchemy yet because I have to restart my character on my own account (thoro is on my friends account). So when PS2 comes out one of the first things I'm going to do is take my newb ass to the alchemy guild and get started with all the stuff I have stockpiled. So hopefully I'll be lvl 40 or so by the end of April.

                  Txs again for the input.

Can anyone possibly compare how far 100k will get me in other crafts? Especially in Goldsmithing/smithing or possibly woodworking . I'd love a comparison. Thanks!

I think arguing how much it will cost to raise skills is irrelevant. Everyone will take a different path to get skillups. There are no realistic apples to apples comparisons for skilling up.

Your cost to skill up depends on the following:

                      How you Aquire Materials

                      A. Farm/Mine/Log/Harvest/Garden all of your materials

                      B. Purchase Everything from the AH with Gil

                      C. Purchase Materials Sold at the Guild

                      D. A Hybrid of the Above

                      How you Sell Your Products

                      A. Sell only at the Auction House or Bazaar

                      B. Sell to the Guild

                      C. Sell to vendors

Of course gathering all of your materials and selling to the Bazaar will yield only profits. You can consider the material value vs. consumption against the final product value and consider that the true loss or gain. In the end, your losses depend on how you got your materials and how you sold the results.

For example, as a smith I never bought Iron Ingots, I only made them from goblin parts. So when I made Iron Visors, my material cost was the cost of the goblin parts and the lighting crystals. When I sold them, I sold them to the guild (they sell worse on AH) Someone had just sold to the guild and lowered the price the guild would pay to its minimum, like 3400 each. I sat on 28 iron visors for 2 1/2 weeks until the price rose to 4700 gil. 4700 gil is nearly the material value had I elected to sell-off materials.

How much you "lose" is dependant on how patient you are and how you manage your materials and aquisitions. I consider any craft a business where you cant look at loses, alone, but you must evaluate the loses as expenditures against the profits.

For your comparisson, I have smithing at 34, goldsmithing at 14, Bonecrafting at 18, woodworking at 30, and leatherworking at 10. I dont feel I have lost any money skilling up at all.

I have 150,000 in cash, about 200,000g worth of gear for my level 45 char and 300k worth of gil for my 43rd level char, and an inventory of very valuable materials - 6 stacks of steel sheets, 2 stacks of iron ingots, stacks of elm lumber, silver, a slew of ebony, mahogany, petrified, and rosewood logs, 20-some quadav backplates, 4 darksteel ores, 3 stacks of bettle jaws, 3 stacks of lizard skins, and 2 stacks of sheep leathers.

I can honestly say I wouldnt have a fraction of my wealth if it wasnt for my crafting, yet I take it very slow. So... my conclusion is that it doesnt cost money to skillup... or it doesnt have to... except leatherworking... leatherworking whores money =P

Clothcrafting is a demanding mistress as well I found.

But then I found it was more that no matter how hard I tried clothcraft skill ups were slow so I guess it's irrelevant.

100k can take your alchemy to at least 55, possible 60. However, this require you make items that will not give you skill up pass level 20 on the side. I have 77.x in Alchemy and I can say I make money before level 50 while skilling up. However, I've spent at least 300-500k from 60 to 77. I am almost done with the recipe that I am currently working on, I can't wait for this nightmare to end.

I started yesterday with 370k and 0 Alchemy skill. I pretty much powerlevelled through it and sold alot of stuff to the vendors. I'm sure you could cut down on losses if you wanted to wait 5 days for the stuff to sell.

I ended the night with 130k and 32 Alchemy skill. I kept the silent oils to sell on the AH and I probably have like 60k worth of those.

Just giving everyone an idea of how much it cost me. I'll probably do 32-52 tonight. I probably won't take it past 60.
