Lightning Crystal + leather headband = 1, 2, or 3 Squares of Sheep's Leather. Since leather headband goes for 200 gil at times at ah, it's a lot cheaper to break down the headband than to buy a square of sheep's leather for 500 gil from the AH.
Ah yes, decomposition. forgot about this one.

I have problems with excess HQ synths when making iron ingots from ore. I keep winding up with steel(dammit). And, yet, goblin synths are still problematic. I get a lot of failures, even at 58 skill, with adv image support, on lightningsday. Mostly it's just loss-of-crystal, but I still lose helms and mail in significant amounts.

        It's really annoying.

I can't really think of any good equipment to break down for iron, either. Maybe baghnaks, they sell pretty cheap . . .

some days i break 2 out of every 3 goblin masks i try to break down -.-

this is very annoying when i was successful doing it when my tanning skill was in the 0-10 range... none-the-less, it's still usually cheaper for me to blow up a bunch of masks than it is to buy a stack of sheep leather from ah for 8500 gil. i rarely use sheep anymore anyway

I was going to post a new thread on what happened to me yesterday to see if someone could shed light on the probability of HQ synths, but I'm glad I found this thread

Basically, what I experienced mirrors what Imac and Mithrael have said. However, I would just want one thing cleared up.

It was on Lightsday at 98% Moon phase (decrescent). I was at lvl 20 in Alchemy and was trying to extract Glass Fiber from Goblin masks with Lightning Crystals. I failed every single synth, while still getting skill, but as soon as I hit 21, I started getting HQs (4 or 6 loops instead of 2). Either I was getting an HQ synth, or I was failing. I got 13 failures and 5 HQs. I've come to these conclusions:

            - Considering the fact that it takes level 20 to do the extraction successfully, it confirms that to get an HQ synth, you need to be at least 1 level above the requiered skill for the synthesis in question.

            - On Lightsday (in particular?), the closer you get to Fullmoon the harder synthesis becomes, but the chance of getting HQ synths when you do succeed rises dramatically.

I say "the closer you get to" instead of simply "In the full moon phase" because I tried again this morning in the Wanning Gibbous phase (83%) on Lightningsday. It was still hard, but contrarely to when it was the fullmoon, I was able to pull off a few normal synths (2 loops). However, I still got 2 HQs, which means it doesn't have to be during the full moon but close enough to it. I get the feeling that your results depend alot more on the moon phase than the day you synth on. I know that your skill level also has alot to do with the HQ synth rate, but I'm hardly high enough for it to be a real factor.

Does my analisys seem correct? Confirmation and/or rebuttals are welcome.

            JR.

This is just a guess, but can't you break down a bone ring into bone chips with a lightning crystal? If that's true he was doing it because it was cheaper than buying the chips.

It should be noted that desynthesis seems to follow different rules when it comes to HQs. The only constant there is that higher skill usually means a better chance for HQs.

When I am breaking down quadav backplates, for example, I get my best results on darksday, even though that day is normally awful for HQs of any sort.

You do not have to have your skill level above the "cap" level to receive a HQ.

When I was making Iron Masks from 25-30 Smithing I made three "+1 Iron Masks". Granted the percentage was very low seeing as how I made almost 70 masks but it is still possible.

Also, Lightning Crystals and the results they give are a completely different ballgame from normal Synthesis. I "think" that there may be an across the board 30% or so failure rate on any given synth involving breaking something down with a lightning crystal. My "data" is fairly extensive regarding this subject, so take my word for it, this stuff is not a walk in the park. HQ1 and HQ2 rates from Goblin items and their like do not give an accurate "base" to enable us to make a comparison with other synths.

I haven't done enough experimenting yet but I am beginning to think that Lightsday may not be the "prime" HQ day that everyone seems to think it is.
