Hi i haven't bought ffxi yet, i'm wondering about the tradeskills (or synthensizing or whater its called in ffxi)
Crafting in games like this really attracts my interest, but many games do it in a way that i don't like.
In ffxi is leveling in crafting completely independent from leveling your character? In EQOA as you went up in tradeskills to craft new items you'd use higher level metals and such. But higher level metals required you to use better hammers, but the better hammers had higher minimum level requirement, so you couldn't make the higher level stuff until your character was 46. Are there tools/skills only higher level characters can use in crafting in ffxi or can lower level character raise their crafting skills as easily as higher levels?
Some games have items usuable in crafting distinguised from other loot and items in game. Is it like that in ffxi? Like will you know right away when you find an item if it can be used to make anything, or are there lots of general items you can make things out of, making it fun to experiment with new loot from different places.
Are any crafted items worthwhile? Can they be sold at the auctionhouse or bazaar for more than the cost to make? in eqoa tradeskills was just a money and time sink, you'd make basic items over and over to level your skills up, losing money the whole way until you capped out your skills. Then you could make back your money by farming for gems and making magic items to sell back to NPC merchants, and any time you found gems you could make money off of them. So pretty much the only use of crafting was making money at high levels. In ffxi i'm hoping even low levels with not a lot of money to burn can make some stuff on occasion and sell it at the auction house.
Anyways what i'm getting at is how the crafting works is one of the major deciding factors in whether or not i'll get this game, and i want to know how deep and rewarding they are. Are all recipies obvious or do some folks have their own "secret recipies?" Is crafting rewarding at any levels or just a waste of cash until your character is high level?
Sorry for the long dumb post, and forgive me if some of this is answered in this forum somewhere; i've been browsing and only seeing stuff on recipies and "where do i find" and "how do i" type questions.. which being that i don't even have the game yet these specific things don't help me get the general feel for it so much.
